TROUBLESHOOTING
ENGINE WILL NOT START
C A U S E
Empty fuel tank
Primer bulb wasn't pressed enough Engine is flooded
Old fuel
Fouled spark plug
Plugged spark arrestor
On/Off Control is in the OFF (O) position
ENGINE WILL NOT IDLE
C A U S E
Air filter is plugged
Old fuel
Improper carburetor adjustment
A C T I O N
Fill fuel tank with new fuel
Press primer bulb fully and slowly 10 times
Pull starter rope repeatedly with throttle control fully engaged and with the choke lever in Position 3
Drain gas tank and add fresh fuel
Replace or clean the spark plug
Clean or replace spark arrestor
Move switch to ON (I)

Replace or clean the air filter
Drain gas tank and add fresh fuel
Adjust according to the Carburetor Adjustments section
ENGINE WILL NOT ACCELERATE

Old fuel
Improper carburetor adjustment
Dirty air filter
Plugged spark arrestor
A C T I O N
Drain gas tank and add fresh fuel
Take unit to a Sears or other qualified service dealer for an adjustment
Clean or replace the air filter
Clean or replace spark arrestor
ENGINE LACKS POWER OR STALLS WHEN UNDER LOAD
C A U S E
Old fuel
Improper carburetor adjustment
Fouled spark plug
Plugged spark arrestor
Low power
Cultivator tines bound with dirt or grass
A C T I O N
Drain gas tank and add fresh fuel
Take unit to a Sears or other qualified service dealer for an adjustment
Replace or clean the spark plug
Clean or replace spark arrestor
Rocker arm clearance adjustment (see page 18)
Stop the unit, switch the On/Off Stop Control to STOP, clean and remove any debris binding the tines
SIGNS OF OIL AROUND OIL FILL PLUG/DIPSTICK
C A U S E
Oil fill plug/dipstick loose or missing
A C T I O N
Tighten oil fill plug/dipstick, replace
UNIT OCCASIONALLY HESITATES AT HIGH SPEEDS
C A U SE
Spark plug gap is too small/close
A C T I O N
Adjust gap to 0.025”
