faulty or improperly seated. Reinstall the memory modules and, if necessary, replace them (see "Memory" on page 119).

N O B O O T D E V I C E A V A I L A B L E The computer cannot find the hard drive. If the hard drive is your boot device, ensure that the drive is installed, properly seated, and partitioned as a boot device.

N O T I M E R T I C K I N T E R R U P T A chip on the system board may be malfunctioning. Run the System Set tests in the Dell Diagnostics (see page 85).

programs open. Close all windows and open the program that you want to use.

O P T I O N A L ROM B A D C H E C K S U M The optional ROM apparently failed. Contact Dell. See "Contacting Dell" on page 141.

AR E Q U I R E D . DLL F I L E W A S N O T F O U N D The program that you are trying to open is missing an essential file. Remove and then reinstall the program.

1Click the Start button and click Control Panel.

2Click Add or Remove Programs.

3Select the program you want to remove.

4Click Remove or Change/Remove and follow the prompts on the screen.

5See the program documentation for installation instructions.

S E C T O R N O T F O U N D The operating system cannot locate a sector on the hard drive. You may have a defective sector or corrupted FAT on the hard drive. Run the Windows error-checking utility to check the file structure on the hard drive. See the Windows Help and Support Center for instructions. To access the Help and Support Center, see "Windows Help and Support Center" on page 13. If a large number of sectors are defective, back up the data (if possible), and then reformat the hard drive.

S E E K E R R O R The operating system cannot find a specific track on the hard drive.

S H U T D O W N F A I L U R E A chip on the system board may be malfunctioning. Run the System Set tests in the Dell Diagnostics (see page 85).

TI M E - O F - D A Y C L O C K L O S T P O W E R System configuration settings are corrupted. Connect your computer to an electrical outlet to charge the battery. If the problem persists, try to restore the data by entering the system setup program. Then immediately exit the program. See "Using the System Setup Program" on page 171. If the message reappears, contact Dell. See "Contacting Dell" on page 141.

TI M E - O F - D A Y C L O C K S T O P P E D The reserve battery that supports the system configuration settings may require recharging. Connect your computer to an electrical outlet to charge the battery. If the problem persists, contact Dell. See "Contacting Dell" on page 141.
