Blade Information

Selecting the right blade requires a knowledge of the various blade characteristics mentioned below, the type of material you plan to cut, and the type of cut you are going to perform.

Blade Length

Measured by the circumference, blade lengths are usually unique to the brand of your bandsaw and the distance between wheels. The Model G0457 is designed for blades that are 106" long. Refer to the current Grizzly catalog for prices and ordering information.

Blade Width

Measured from the back of the blade to the tip of the blade tooth (the widest point), blade width is often the first consideration given to blade selec- tion. Blade width dictates the largest and smallest curve that can be cut, as well as how accurately it can cut a straight line.

The Model G0457 can use blades from 18" to 34" in width. Always pick the size of blade that best suits your application.

Curve Cutting: Use the chart in Figure 42 to determine the correct blade for curve cutting. Determine the smallest radius curve that will be cut on your workpiece and use the corre- sponding blade width.

Straight Cutting: Use the largest width blade that you own. The Model G0457 will accept blades up to 34" wide. Narrow blades can cut tight curves (a small radius) but are not very good at cutting straight lines because they naturally wander (blade lead). However, larger blades are much better at cutting straight lines, but function poorly at cutting small curves because of their size.

Tooth Style

When selecting blades, another option to con- sider is the shape, gullet size, teeth set and teeth angle—otherwise known as “Tooth Style.”

Figure 43 shows the three main categories of tooth style:

Raker Skip Hook

Figure 43. Raker, Skip & Hook tooth styles.

Raker: This style is considered to be the standard because the tooth size and shape are the same as the tooth gullet. The teeth on raker blades usually are very numerous, have no angle, and produce cuts by scrap- ing the material; these characteristics result in very smooth cuts, but do not cut fast and generate more heat while cutting.

Skip: This style is similar to a raker blade that is missing every other tooth. Because of the design, skip toothed blades have a much larger gullet than raker blades, and therefore, cut faster and generate more heat. However, these blades also leave a rougher cut than raker blades.

One of the standout features of the G0457 is its powerful 2 HP motor, which provides ample strength to cut through a variety of materials, including hardwoods and softwoods. This motor is designed for consistent performance, minimizing the risk of stalling during operation. Furthermore, the bandsaw is equipped with a large cutting capacity, boasting a 14-inch resaw height and a 13-inch maximum cutting width, enabling users to tackle larger projects with ease.

The construction of the Grizzly G0457 is another key highlight. The machine features a solid cast iron frame that enhances stability and reduces vibrations during operation. This sturdy design contributes to improved accuracy, ensuring that cuts are clean and true. Furthermore, the oversized wheels are made of aluminum, allowing for smoother operation and a longer lifespan.

In terms of technology, the G0457 utilizes a precision-machined aluminum fence system. This system is designed for easy adjustments, providing users with the ability to make quick and accurate cuts. The bandsaw also includes a blade tension release, which simplifies blade changes and prolongs the lifespan of the blade itself. Additionally, the quick-release blade tension lever allows for easy adjustments, enhancing overall efficiency.

Safety features are also a priority in the design of the Grizzly G0457. It includes an easy-to-access power switch and a blade guard to protect users from potential injuries. The adjustable upper and lower blade guides ensure optimal performance and safety during operation.

The G0457 is also designed with convenience in mind. It includes a built-in dust port to help maintain a clean workspace. This feature minimizes dust accumulation, promoting a healthier environment and improving visibility while cutting.

In summary, the Grizzly G0457 bandsaw is a powerful and reliable tool that combines innovative features, robust construction, and user-friendly design.
