There are two primary applications for network switches. The first application is to connect multiple 10 Mb/s shared media repeaters into a network switch port, thereby segmenting each repeater from the next. This isolates network traffic within a single collision domain. If traffic is destined for another network, it passes through the switch at wire speed. The high-speed uplink connection on the switch connects to the enterprise backbone. The second application is to provide each workstation on the network a dedicated 10 Mb/s of bandwidth and switch the workstation traffic to a high-speed uplink connected to a server.
