to prevent the saw from pinching. Make
thefirs t cut on the pressure s ide to relieve
the stress on the log.

BUCKING USING A LOG OR SUP-

LIMBING AND PRUNING

WARNING:Be alert for and guard
against kickback. Do not allow the moving
chain to contact any other branched or object s
at the nose of the guide bar when limbing or
pruning. Allowing s uch contact can result in
serious injury.
WARNING:Neverclimbintoatreeto
limb or prune. Do not stand on ladders, plat -
forms,a log, or in any position whic h can cause
you to lose your balance or controlof the saw.

IMPORTANT POINTS

SWatch out for springpoles. Use extreme
cautionwhen cutting small size limbs. Slen-
dermaterial may catch t he saw chain and be
whipped toward you or pull you off balance.
SBe alert for springback. Watch out for
branches that are bent or under pressure.
Avoid being struck by the branch or the
sawwhen the tens ion in the wood fibers is
released.
SKeep a clear work area. Frequently clear
branches out of the way to avoid tripping
over them.

LIMBING

SAlwayslimb a tree after it is cut dow n. Only
thencan limbing be done safely and prop-
erly.
SLeave the larger limbs underneath the
felledtree to support t he tree as you work.
SStartat base of t he felled treeand w ork to-
ward the top, cutting branches and limbs.
Remove small limbs with one cut.
SKeep the tree between you and the chain
as much as possible.
SRemove larger, supporting branches with
thecutting techniques desc ribed in BUCK-
ING WITHOUTA SUPPO RT.
SAlways use an overcut to cut small and
freely hanging limbs. Undercutting could
cause limbs to fall and pinch saw.

PRUNING

WARNING:Limit pruning to limbs
shoulder height or below. Do not cut if
branchesar e higher than your shoulder. Get
apr ofessional to do the job.
SMakeyour fist cut 1/3 of the way through
the bottom of the limb.
SNextmake a 2nd cut all the way through
