Sorting Shirts can be used to group students into cooperative learning groups, perform round-robin reading, call on students randomly without playing favorites, and help prevent calling on the same students all the time. Shirts can be grouped by the team color, name, and sport printed on the shirt. Teachers can also write each student’s name on the shirts for additional sorting activities.

Use the sorting shirts to randomly place students into different learning groups. Pass out a shirt to each student, then group them according to one of the attributes on the shirt: color of shirt, team name, or sport.

Placing students into different learning groups each time will encourage students to work with others and learn from each other.

If you use the shirts to call on students randomly throughout a lesson, write the name of each student on the shirts. It is best to use a permanent marker or wet-erase marker to write the names if you plan on using them multiple times throughout the year.

The sorting shirts can also be used to introduce students in the beginning of the year. Have all of the students with the same colored sorting shirt get together and introduce each other to the class. This is a great ice breaker to use during the first few days of school.

The sorting shirts were designed to help you run your class more efficiently. Students will enjoy being grouped by these shirts. Allow the students to decide how to be grouped once the shirts are passed out. This will give them some ownership and teach cooperative decision- making skills.
