the input preamplifier used to amplify and equalize signals from phonograph pickups, microphones or tape heads. Skillful circuit layout, proper grounding, and adequate shielding reduce the hum so low it is virtually unmeasurable. Extreme care in manufactur- ing combined with low noise tubes, high specific resistivity circuit boards, metal film and wire wound resistors achieves new low in residual noise.

The second amplifier section follows the main volume control, making it impossible to overload the high level input circuits or any following circuits. The same design tech- niques as used in the preamplifier section assure low noise and hum. The BASS and TREBLE feedback-type tone controls operate in connection with this amplifier section. The controls are switch-type with approximately 4 db change per step. Exceedingly low distor- tion and precise control of frequency re- sponse contours are assured using this arrangement.

Front panel tape jacks are provided for convenient use of an external tape machine. The TAPE JACK switch connects the jacks for either playback or recording through the C22.

The third section is the cathode follower output. The sharp cutoff (18 db per octave)

RUMBLE and HF (high frequency) filters are associated with this section. OUTPUT LEVEL controls are located at the inputs of the cath- ode followers to allow simple balance of the entire amplifier-speaker system. The OUT- PUT LEVEL controls are located on top of the C22, behind the front panel. These controls are conveniently accessible by releasing the PANLOC buttons and sliding the C22 out to the adjust position.

The power supply deserves special men- tion. The power transformer is constructed with "core" type grain oriented laminations and magnetic shielding for low external hum- fields. Long life rectifiers with full wave rectification, filter condenser sectionalizing and careful grounding add to the hum-free long life characteristics of the C22.

Special attention has been given to the mechanical design. The PANLOC system is the first professional installation technique to be used on stereo instruments. The PANLOC system gives you absolute ease of installation, operation and maintenance. The C22 may be conveniently installed in furni- ture cabinets, custom-built installations, pro- fessional relay racks or an attractive finished Mclntosh cabinet.

c22, mcintosh stereo preamplifier specifications

The McIntosh C22 stereo preamplifier is a hallmark of high-fidelity audio performance, embodying the timeless craftsmanship and advanced technology for which McIntosh is renowned. Introduced in the early 1960s and reimagined in modern versions, the C22 has remained a powerful tool for audiophiles and music enthusiasts seeking to achieve the ultimate listening experience.

One of the main features of the McIntosh C22 is its unparalleled versatility. It includes multiple inputs, making it compatible with various sources, such as turntables, CD players, and streaming devices. The preamplifier offers both phono and line-level inputs, allowing users to connect a wide range of devices while ensuring the highest quality sound.

The C22 employs a unique vacuum tube circuitry that contributes to its warm and rich tone. The use of vacuum tubes, combined with solid-state technology, provides a sonic character that is both dynamic and detailed. This hybrid design results in a smoother frequency response and adds depth and warmth to the music, making it particularly appealing for listeners who enjoy vinyl records.

Another characteristic feature of the C22 is its analog volume control, providing precise adjustments to sound levels without introducing unwanted noise that often comes with digital controls. The preamplifier’s tone controls allow users to tailor the sound profile to their personal preference, enhancing the listening experience for various musical genres.

In terms of technology, the McIntosh C22 supports high-quality audio formats, equipped with balanced and unbalanced outputs for seamless integration with power amplifiers. This ensures that the integrity of the audio signal is maintained throughout the audio chain. The C22 also incorporates the proprietary McIntosh Autoformer technology that guarantees consistent performance, regardless of the connected equipment's impedance.

The build quality of the C22 is another highlight. Enclosed in a striking chassis with a classic glass front panel, the preamplifier features an iconic blue meter display, which not only serves a functional purpose but also adds to its aesthetic appeal. The craftsmanship is complemented by high-end components that promise durability and longevity.

Overall, the McIntosh C22 stereo preamplifier stands as a testament to the blend of vintage elegance and contemporary high-fidelity technology. Its distinctive sound signature, extensive connectivity options, and robust construction make it an essential component for anyone serious about achieving an exceptional audio experience. Whether you are a dedicated audiophile or a casual listener, the C22 delivers a sonic performance that resonates with the soul of music.
