If an attack were launched from the WAN and an internal source address was used in the offending packet, normal routers would slow down, as they would not be able to tell where to respond. SPI-based routers are able to compare the “state” of the packet relative to previous packets and determine that the source address is incorrect, and therefore the offending packet would be dropped, thereby avoiding a slow down on the network.
