Matrice attiva

Tipo di struttura per display a cristalli liquidi in cui a ciascun pixel sono collegati dei transistor di commutazione per controllare la tensione di attivazione/spegnimento. Consente di produrre un'immagine più brillante e nitida, con un angolo di visualizzazione più ampio rispetto ai display a matrice passiva. Vedere anche TFT (thin film transistor, transistor a pellicola sottile).

Silicone amorfo (amorphous silicon, a-Si)

Materiale semiconduttore utilizzato per creare uno strato di transistor a pellicola sottile (thin film transistors, TFT) su un LCD a matrice attiva.

Formato (Aspect Ratio)

Il rapporto larghezza/altezza dell'area attiva del display. La maggior parte dei monitor hanno un formato di 4:3. I monitor di tipo "wide" hanno un formato di 16:9 oppure 16:10.

Retroilluminazione (Backlight)

Sorgente luminosa di un LCD riflettente. Attualmente esistono due tecniche di realizzazione degli LCD. La maggior parte dei pannelli LCD TFT utilizzano un sistema CCFL (luce fluorescente a catodo freddo) e un pannello diffusore direttamente dietro lo strato di cristalli liquidi. Sono in fase di sviluppo nuove tecnologie che utilizzano diodi luminosi (LED).
