LIMBING AND PRUNING

WARNING: Be alert for and guard
against kickback. Do not allow the moving
chain to contact any other branches or ob-
jects at the nose of the guide bar w hen limb-
ingor pruning. Allowings uch contact can re-
sult in serious injury.
WARNING: Nev er climb into a tree
to limb or prune. Do not stand on ladders,
platforms,a log, or in any positionwhich c an
cause you to lose your balance or control of
thesaw.

IMPORTANT POINTS

SWork slowly, keeping both hands firmly
grippedon the saw. Maintain secure foot-
ingand balanc e.
SWatch out for springpoles. U se extreme
caution when cutting small size limbs.
Slendermaterial may catcht he saw chain
andbe whipped toward y ou or pull you off
balance.
SBe alert for springback. Watch out for
branches that are bent or under pressure.
Avoid being struck by the branch or the
sawwhen the tens ion in the wood fibers is
released.
SKeep a clear work area. Frequently clear
branches out of the way to avoid tripping
over them.

LIMBING

SAlwayslimb a tree after itis cut down. Only
thencan limbingbe done safely andprop-
erly.
SLeave the larger limbs underneath the
felledtree to support t he tree as you work.
SStartat the base of the felled tr ee and work
toward the top, cutting branches and
limbs. Remove small limbs with one cut.
SKeepthe tr ee between you and the chain.
Cut from the side of the tree opposite the
branch you are cutting.
SRemove larger, supporting branches with
thecutting techniques desc ribed in BUCK-
ING WITHOUTA SUPPO RT.
SAlways use an overcut to cut small and
freely hanging limbs. Undercutting c ould
cause limbs to fall and pinch the saw.

PRUNING

WARNING: Limit pruning to limbs
shoulder height or below. Do not cut if
branchesar e higher than your shoulder. Get
apr ofessional to do the job.
SMake your fist cut 1/3 of the way
through the bottom of the limb.
SNext make a 2nd cut all the way
through the limb. Then cut a third
overcut leavinga1to2inchcollarfrom
the truck of the tree.
