A fényképek megvilágítását a rekesznyílás vagy a zársebesség megadásával szabályozhatja. Ezeket a lehetőségeket a Rekesznyílás- prioritás, a Zársebesség-prioritás és a Kézi üzemmódban használhatja.

Rekesznyílásérték

A rekesznyílás az a rés, amelyen keresztül a fény bejut a fényképezőgépbe. A rekesznyílás értékének beállításával szabályozhatja, hogy mennyi fény jusson az érzékelőre fényképezéskor. A rekesznyílás értékének csökkentésével (a rekesznyílás méretének növelésével) több fény jut be, így a távolabbi tárgyak nem lesznek élesek. Ez közeli képek vagy portrék esetén hasznos, hogy a figyelmet a fő témára terelje. Ezzel szemben a rekesznyílás értékének növelésével a közeli és távoli tárgyak egyaránt élesek lesznek. Ez tájképek esetén hasznos, hogy a látkép teljes tartománya éles legyen.

Zársebesség

A zársebesség határozza meg, hogy fényképezéskor a fényképezőgép zárszerkezete mennyi ideig maradjon nyitva. A zársebesség csökkentésekor több fény jut be a fényképezőgépbe, és a fénykép világosabb lesz, ám alacsonyabb zársebesség esetén elmosódhat a kép, ha a téma vagy a fényképezőgép elmozdul.

Ha növeli a zársebességet, a fénykép sötétebb lesz, ugyanakkor a nagyobb zársebesség csökkenti a kép elmosódását abban az esetben, ha a téma vagy a fényképezőgép mozgásban van.
