SUPER-CARDIOID

DYNAMIC MICROPHONE MD 412

Introduction:

The super-cardioid dynamic microphone MD 412 is the right microphone lor advanced amateurs who are becoming lamiliar with the multiple possibilities 01 tape recording and who wish to use a microphone with good characteristics and technical comlort.

The MD 412 is equally suited tor speech or music recordings. Two microphones 01 this type can be used lor stereo recordings. The Irequency range covers 50 . . . 14000 Hz and meets the requirements 01 the HiFi-standard to DIN 45500. By means 01 the speech/ music switch the Irequency response can be altered to meet the HiFi-standard again when the microphone is used even at elose up tal king distance 01 5 cm. The super-cardioid directional characteristic 01 the MD 412 ensures good recordings even under difficult conditions such as noisy backgrounds or rooms with bad acoustics.

The impedance 01 the microphone is laid out in a way that the

microphone can be connected to practically all tape and cassette recorders on the market.

The housing 01 the microphone has a dull black linish. The MD 412

is supplied with a yellow windscreen and with a collapsible desk stand.

Models:

MD 412 LM

The MD 412 LM is litted with a lixed 2 m connection cable and a 3-pin connector according to DIN 41524.

MD 412-K

The microphone MD 412-K is litted with a 2 m connection cable and a 6.3 mm jack plug.

Operating Hints

Mounting the microphone (Fig. 1)

The microphone can be mounted either on the desk stand supplied with the microphone or on a tripod which is available as accessory. For litting on a tripod the upper part 01 the desk stand is screwed off and then assembled with the tripod (3/8" thread).

For recordings where it is not possible to mount a microphone on a tripod because 01 Ilexibility, the microphone can be detached lrom the holder and may be used as a handheld microphone.

Connecting the microphone

The microphone MD 412 is designed lor use with a tape or cassette recorder with low or medium impedance inputs. The wiring diagram shows the basic circuit 01 the microphone (Fig 2). With the LM- version pins 1 and 3 01 the microphone's plug are interconnected so that the MD 412 LM can be used directly with a large number 01 tape and cassette recorders.

For connecting the MD 412 LM with high-impedance microphone

inputs the cable translormer T8 514 M is available. The cable translormer serves at the same time as an extension because it is

litted with a 5 m cable.

Speech/music switch

The speech/music switch is an important advantage 01 the MD 412 (Fig. 3). The switch is situated at the top 01 the microphone and it is easily accessible. The two possible positions 01 the switch are clear- Iy marked by the letters "M" (music) and "8" (speech). According to the particular position 01 the switch one letter will be visible. The switch lacilitates attenuation 01 the low Irequencies so that there

is no overaccentuation 01 the bass range with elose-up use 01 the microphone. At a talking distance 01 5 cm and with the switch in position "speech" the Irequency response 01 the microphone is again approximately linear. In the position "speech" the microphone sensitivity to handling noises is also reduced. For recordings Irom a larger distance and with the microphone mounted on a tripod the switch position "M" will be chosen. For close-up use and using the MD 412 as a hand held microphone the position "speech" wbuld be necessary to prevent an overaccentuation 01 the low Irequencies

and to take advantage 01 the increased insensitivity to handling noise.

Directional properties

The microphone MD 412 has a super-cardioid directional characteristic. The difference between the sound coming trom the lront and the noise level picked up lrom the other sides 01 the microphone is extremely lavourable so that the microphone is able to reduce a great part 01 ambient noises. That means that the record-

ings with this microphone are successlull even under rlifficult acoustical conditions.
