OPERATING THE TRIMMER / MOWER

Once you have read and understood the sections in this Manual on “Safety,” “Features and Controls,” “Assembly,” and “Operation,” you are ready to start and operate your trimmer/mower.

“START” position to start the en- gine. (Use short starting cycles

–15 seconds per minute– to ex- tend starter life.) When released, the key will automatically move to the “RUN” position.

WARNING

If the control bail is not oper- ating properly, shut off the engine, disconnect the spark plug wire and move wire away from plug.

Checklist Before Starting:

1.Complete the Pre-Start Checklist in this section of the Manual. You must wear safety glasses or goggles.

2.Check that the line cutting height is adjusted according to the instructions.

Starting the Engine

1.Move the trimmer/mower to the work area.

2.Connect the spark plug wire to the spark plug (if not connected).

3.Put on safety-approved eye protection.

4.Start the engine as follows:

Recoil Start Model—

a)Put the engine ON/OFF switch (A, Figure 4-5) in the ON position.

b)Move the engine throttle lever (B, Figure 4-5) all the way forward to the FAST (“Rabbit”) position.

c)Push in the fuel primer button (C, Figure 4-5) as instructed in the Engine Owner’s Manual. NOTE: Priming is usually not needed to restart a warm engine. However, cool weather may require that priming be used.

d)Pull recoil start rope slowly until resistance is felt. Then pull rope out rapidly to start engine. Let rope back in slowly. Repeat if necessary.

Electric Start Model—

Follow Steps 1, 2, 3, 4a, 4b and 4c given previously.

Power Up the Trimmer Head

1.Stand in the operator’s position directly behind the handlebars.

2.Slowly close the control bail (D, Figure 4-6) against the handlebars to activate the trimmer head. The faster the engine throttle control is set at, the faster the trimmer head line will re- volve. Use higher speed settings for the toughest jobs. Use lower speeds (and lighter weight line) where preci- sion cutting is required. And experi- ment!

3.Once the trimmer head is revolving, push the trimmer/mower along the path to be cut.

To Stop the Trimmer Head

Let go of the control bail (D, Figure 4-6). It will return to its open position and the trimmer head will stop turning.

To Stop the Engine

Put the engine ON/OFF switch in the OFF position. (If time allows, first move throttle lever to SLOW setting before stopping engine.)
