4 Connecting the Equipment

This section describes the process for connecting the device to the network.

STEP 1 Power down all of the devices you want to connect to the switch.

STEP 2 Connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port of a PC, printer, network storage, or other network device.

NOTE We recommend using Cat5e or better cable. Also, do not exceed the maximum cabling distance of 328 feet (100 meters) per segment.

STEP 3 Connect the other end of the network Ethernet cable to one of the numbered unmanaged switch Ethernet ports.

STEP 4 Repeat Step 2 and Step 3 for each device you want to connect to the unmanaged switch.

CAUTION Make sure you use the power adapter included with the switch. Using a different power adapter might damage the switch.

STEP 5 Connect the power adapter to the power port on the back panel of the unmanaged switch.

STEP 6 Power up the devices connected to the switch. The LED of each active port on the switch lights.

NOTE To prioritize voice or video traffic by using the QoS feature on the Cisco SG 100D-08, set flow control to off in the configurations of the connected devices. Otherwise, flow control might send a pause frame to the switch, blocking the high-priority QoS packets queued on the port. On some devices, such as some IP phones and IP cameras, flow control might not be configurable.

SG100D08PNA specifications

The Cisco Systems SG100D08PNA is a reliable and highly efficient unmanaged switch designed for small to medium-sized businesses that require efficient data handling without the complexity of configuration. This model is particularly ideal for users looking to simplify their networking setup while still benefiting from high performance and advanced features.

One of the standout features of the SG100D08PNA is its 8 Gigabit Ethernet ports. These ports provide fast connectivity for devices such as computers, printers, and storage devices within a local area network. With Gigabit speeds, the switch enables high-speed data transfer, ensuring that file sharing and communications occur seamlessly.

The switch is designed to be plug-and-play, which means users can simply connect their devices without the need for any setup or management. This user-friendly approach is perfect for small businesses, allowing them to focus on their core operations without having to worry about complex network configurations.

In terms of power management, the SG100D08PNA supports Power over Ethernet (PoE), facilitating the powering of compatible devices through the same Ethernet cable used for data traffic. This feature is particularly beneficial for deploying devices like IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points without needing separate power sources, thereby simplifying deployment and reducing clutter.

Moreover, this switch operates with Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) technology. This innovation helps minimize energy consumption by intelligently managing power based on the traffic load and the specific conditions of the network during periods of low activity. This results in reduced operating costs and contributes to a greener environment by lowering power consumption.

The SG100D08PNA is built with a sturdy design suitable for desktop use, and its compact form factor makes it easy to integrate into office spaces. Additionally, its fanless design ensures that it operates silently, which is especially advantageous in office settings where noise can be a distraction.

In summary, the Cisco Systems SG100D08PNA is an excellent choice for businesses that require a dependable networking solution without the complexity of managing a configured switch. With its 8 Gigabit ports, PoE support, energy-efficient operation, and simple plug-and-play functionality, it delivers the performance and features necessary for a robust and effective network setup ideal for small to medium-sized enterprise environments.
