Installation Notes

ƒThe drive should be mounted carefully on the surface of 0.1mm or less flatness to avoid excessive distortion.

ƒIn order to prevent short-circuit under any circumstances, a space of 0.5mm or more should be kept under the PCB.

ƒSpace should be kept around the drive to avoid any contact with other parts, which may occur due to shock or vibration.

ƒThe temperature of the top cover and the base must always be kept under 60C to maintain the required reliability.

ƒBe sure not to cover the breathing hole to keep the pressure inside the drive at a certain level

ƒDo not apply any force to the top cover, except the screw areas on top cover. Maximum force to the specified area is 2N.

ƒThe drive contains several parts which may be easily damaged by ESD (Electric Static Discharge). Avoid touching the interface connector pins and the surface of PCB. Be sure to use ESD proof wrist strap when handling drive.

ƒThe four mounting screws should be tightened equally with 0.3N-m (3kgf-cm) torque. The depth should be 3.0mm minimum and 3.5mm maximum.

Placing Hard Drive inside your Computer

Determine mounting configuration (the drive can be mounted in either a horizontal or vertical orientation)

Configure drive for system application.

Configure the adapter board for the specific system application (if required).

Install adapter board into an unused PC/AT 16 bit slot (if required).

Install the I/F cable to the system's 44 pin connector port or adapter board. Ensure pin 1 is oriented correctly, (pin 1 on the cable is usually identified by a red or blue strip.)

Set correct drive type in system CMOS

Refer to applicable manuals for software installation instructions.

Important Note: Disconnect power from your computer system before beginning installation.

MK1214GAP specifications

The Toshiba MK1214GAP is a notable hard disk drive (HDD) that stands out for its balance of performance, capacity, and reliability. Launched in the early 2000s, it was primarily designed for use in portable devices such as laptops and external storage solutions. This drive is particularly recognized for its compact size and efficient power consumption, making it an ideal choice for mobile applications.

One of the key features of the MK1214GAP is its 120 GB storage capacity. While this may seem modest by today's standards, it was quite impressive during its time, as it allowed users to store a significant amount of data, including documents, media files, and software applications. The drive operates at a rotational speed of 5400 RPM, providing a good balance between speed and energy efficiency, which is particularly important for battery-operated devices.

In terms of technology, the MK1214GAP utilizes perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR), which enhances data density and improves read/write speeds. This technology enables the drive to pack more data into the same physical space compared to traditional longitudinal recording methods. Additionally, the drive features a 2 MB cache buffer, which helps improve performance by allowing faster access to frequently accessed data.

The Toshiba MK1214GAP is equipped with a SATA (Serial ATA) interface, which provides a high data transfer rate and greater bandwidth compared to older IDE interfaces. This allows for quicker data access and improved overall system performance. The drive’s form factor is 2.5 inches, making it compatible with a wide range of laptop and external storage configurations.

Reliability is another significant aspect of this HDD. It has built-in features such as advanced error correction and shock detection, which help protect the drive against data loss due to bumps and drops, a critical consideration for portable devices. Furthermore, Toshiba’s rigorous testing ensures that the MK1214GAP meets high standards for durability and longevity.

In summary, the Toshiba MK1214GAP hard disk drive combines a respectable 120 GB storage capacity with efficient performance and reliability. Its advanced technologies, including PMR and SATA interface, position it as a reliable choice for mobile computing, despite the advancements in storage technology since its release. Understanding these features helps users appreciate the MK1214GAP’s impact in the realm of portable storage solutions during its prime.
