When you connect your headphones to the PHONES jack of the system,

the HP. THEATER mode allows you to experience a theater like environment while listening through a pair of headphones. This mode is very effective with 5.1 ch discreet signal sources like Dolby Digital and DTS. Selecting any Sound Field (except A.F.D or 2CH STEREO) enables the mode.
