Trouble shooting

Many problems have a simple cause which is simple to put right.

In this section we list a number of possible problems together with the method of eliminating them.

If you meet a problem which cannot be sorted out using these notes, then please disconnect the mains supply at the wall socket and contact an authorised service workshop without delay.

inserted incorrectly or flat.

Remedy:

Insert batteries correctly and/or replace

with new cells.

Cause 2:

No visual contact between system and

remote control handset.

Remedy:

transmitter has direct line-of-sight con-

tact with the receiver - note that glass

doors can interrupt the connection.

Maximum range

between

transmitter

and receiver: approx. 6 metres.

Be sure to position the remote control

receiver (located in the display) where it

is not subjected to direct sunlight or very

bright artificial light.

Fluorescent tubes and energy-saving

lamps are powerful sources of interfer-

ence.

Cause 3:

The cassette recorder is not selected as

the current listening source (TAPE 1) on

the PT 820 M, i. e. the remote control

commands are being passed to some

other device in the 'M'-system instead of

the cassette recorder.

Record level set too high / bias level set

too low.

Remedy:

Adjust levels and repeat the recording.

Cause 2:

Heads dirty.

Remedy:

Use a head cleaning cassette after

every 10 hours or so of use. The proce-

dure is described in the instructions

supplied with the cleaning cassette.

Problem:

Audible background hiss or unnatural

sounding reproduction on playback.

Cause 1:

The DOLBY noise reduction system

used for playback is not the same as

that used for the recording.

Remedy:

Select the DOLBY noise reduction

system which was used for recording.

Cause 2:

Heads dirty.

Remedy:

Clean the heads using a cleaning cas-

sette (see above).

Cause 3:

The heads and metal parts are mag-

netised.

Remedy:

The heads and other metal parts which

come into contact with the tape should

be de-magnetised after about 20 - 30

hours' use. Degaussing cassettes are

available commercially for this purpose.

Note:

Athorough de-magnetising with a special tape head degaussing unit can be carried out by your specialist Hi-Fi dealer.
