La tension artérielle, c’est quoi ?

On appelle tension artérielle la pression du sang sur la paroi des artères. La contraction du coeur par laquelle le sang est chassé dans les artères est dite systolique. La dilatation du coeur ramenant le sang au coeur est dite dias- tolique. La tension artérielle est mesurée en millimètres de mercure (mmHg).

Qu’est-ce qui influence la tension artérielle ? La tension artérielle peut varier suite à plusieurs facteurs dont l’âge, le poids, l’heure du jour, le niveau d’activité, le climat, l’altitude et la saison. Certaines activités peuvent affecter votre tension d’une façon significative. Marcher peut augmenter la tension systolique de 12 mm de mercure et la tension dias- tolique de 5,5 mm de mercure. Dormir peut diminuer la tension systolique de jusqu’à 10 mm de mercure. Prendre sa tension de façon répétitive sans attendre 5 minutes entre lectures ou sans lever le bras pour ramener le sang au coeur, peuvent également l’affecter.

En plus de ces facteurs, les breuvages à teneur en caféine ou alcool, certains médicaments, un excès de tension nerveuse, et même des vêtements trop ser- rés peuvent influencer l’exactitude des résultats.

Qu’est-ce qui cause les fluctuations des lectures ? La tension artérielle d’une personne varie énormément d’un jour à l’autre et d’une saison à l’autre. Dans les patients hypertensifs, ces fluctuations sont encore plus prononcées. Normalement, la tension artérielle augmente pen- dant le travail et diminue à des niveaux très bas pendant le sommeil.
