Connecting to an Ethernet network

The built-in Ethernet capabilities of your Workgroup Server 8550 allow you to connect to any standard Ethernet network using thin coaxial (or “coax”), 10BASE-T twisted-pair, or thick coaxial cables; fiber-optic media; or other standard Ethernet cables.

You can connect your server directly to an Ethernet network using a 10BASE-T twisted-pair cable. To connect the server to an Ethernet network using coaxial cables, you need one of the following Ethernet media adapters:

mApple Ethernet Thin Coax Transceiver

mApple Ethernet AUI Adapter

See your Apple-authorized dealer for more information on Apple Ethernet media adapters for your Workgroup Server 8550.

WARNING Do not connect cables to the back of the server when the power is on or you may damage your system.

You can connect an adapter and cable for an Ethernet network directly to the server without installing an expansion card. You can find the Ethernet ports on the back of your server by looking for the Ethernet icon:

AAUI Ethernet port

10BASE-T Ethernet port

Although you can connect cables to both of these Ethernet ports at the same time, you can use only one of these built-in Ethernet connections at a time.

The following sections provide basic instructions for connecting your server to an Ethernet network.
