Mechanical Assembly

1.To replace the cartridge, first release the headshell assembly from the tone arm by turning the locking ring clockwise. Carefully remove the headshell assembly and turn it over so that the stylus is visible. Remove the stylus assembly by pulling it away from the cartridge body at a slight angle. [See Figure 7.] Place the stylus assembly out of harm’s way.

2.Remove the cartridge body by loosening the two small screws securing the cartridge to the headshell. Set the hardware aside to be reused with the new cartridge.

3.Unpack the new cartridge and carefully remove its stylus assembly. Place the stylus assembly out of harm’s way. Mount the new cartridge to the headshell assembly. Use the mounting hardware supplied with the new cartridge or the existing hardware removed at step 2. Tighten the mounting screws until just snug. Replace the stylus assembly briefly to check for mechanical interference with the mounting hardware. The stylus assembly should click into place. Make certain the new cartridge is properly positioned in the headcase assembly per the manufacturer’s instructions. Again remove the stylus assembly for safekeeping.

Electrical Connections

1.Four terminals at the rear of the cartridge are color coded to match standard wiring in stereo tone arms. [See Figure 8.] Connect the cartridge with the slip-on lugs provided on the headshell wiring. NEVER SOLDER TO CARTRIDGE TERMINALS! Heat applied to the terminals will damage the internal cartridge wiring.

2.For monaural operation, the left and right signal leads should be connected to the monaural output terminal and the left and right ground leads should be connected to the ground terminal.

3.Finally, gently push the stylus onto the cartridge body being careful not to damage the stylus. The stylus assembly should click into place. Replace the headshell assembly onto the tone arm taking care not to damage the stylus assembly.

(Note: After replacing the cartridge, reset the tone arm balance, stylus force and anti-skate based on the new cartridge’s specifications.)

AT-PL120 specifications

The Audio-Technica AT-PL120 is a remarkable turntable that appeals to both vinyl enthusiasts and casual listeners alike. Known for its robust build and high-quality audio performance, this model offers a range of features that make it a standout in the world of analog music playback.

One of the key characteristics of the AT-PL120 is its direct-drive motor system. This technology significantly enhances the playback experience by providing a consistent rotational speed and reducing wow and flutter, thus ensuring precise audio reproduction. The turntable operates at both 33 1/3 and 45 RPM, accommodating a variety of vinyl records. Users can easily switch speeds with the push of a button, making it versatile for different formats.

The AT-PL120 is equipped with a heavy die-cast aluminum platter that contributes to its stable performance. The platter's weight aids in reducing vibrations, allowing for superior sound quality. Additionally, the included rubber mat helps to dampen any external noise and contributes to an overall better grip for the records.

Another notable feature is the adjustable tonearm. The straight tonearm design minimizes tracking error and enhances the overall playback accuracy. It also allows for precise tracking force adjustment, enabling users to tailor the setup according to their preferred cartridge and stylus combination. This flexibility is vital for audiophiles who seek to extract the best sound from their vinyl collection.

The AT-PL120 also provides a built-in switchable phono preamp. This feature allows users to connect the turntable directly to any audio system without needing an external phono stage. The preamp can be bypassed, giving users the option to use a higher-end external phono preamp or integrated amplifier for even better sound.

For connectivity, the AT-PL120 includes both RCA output connectors and a headphone output, making it compatible with a wide range of audio equipment. The turntable also features a detachable headshell, making cartridge replacement quick and easy.

In conclusion, the Audio-Technica AT-PL120 is a well-crafted turntable that combines advanced technology with user-friendly features. Its reliable direct-drive system, adjustable tonearm, and built-in preamp make it an excellent choice for anyone looking to enjoy the rich, warm sound of vinyl. Whether you are a seasoned audiophile or just beginning your vinyl journey, the AT-PL120 is designed to deliver an exceptional listening experience.
