2/16-EL specifications

The Compaq 2/16-EL, introduced in the early 1980s, is a notable entry into the annals of personal computing, particularly recognized for its portability and innovation during a time when computing technology was rapidly evolving. This model is part of Compaq’s 2/16 family, which was designed to cater to both business and personal users, focusing on performance and versatility.

One of the standout features of the Compaq 2/16-EL is its compact design. Weighing around 11.5 pounds and measuring slightly larger than a briefcase, it appealed to professionals on the move, making it one of the more portable options available at the time. The 2/16-EL boasts a 16-bit microprocessor, which allows it to run more complex applications efficiently. This was a significant step up from the 8-bit processors that dominated the previous decade.

The system is equipped with a CRT display that supports a resolution of 640 x 200 pixels, providing clear visuals for text and graphics. This resolution was quite impressive for a portable computer in the early 1980s. Users enjoyed the ability to view multiple lines of text clearly, which was essential for word processing and business applications.

In terms of storage, the Compaq 2/16-EL comes with a built-in floppy disk drive, which allows for easy data transfer and software installation. With support for 5.25-inch floppy disks, users could store a reasonable amount of data that was adequate for the business applications of the time. Additionally, the availability of external drives provided expandability, an important feature for users who required more storage.

Another key characteristic of the 2/16-EL is its compatibility with MS-DOS, a prevalent operating system during the computer's launch. This ensured that users had access to a wide range of software applications, enhancing the system's functionality and appeal. Moreover, the 2/16-EL features a keyboard designed for comfortable typing, which is crucial for prolonged use, particularly in business environments.

The Compaq 2/16-EL represents a significant advancement in the evolution of portable computing, combining innovative technology with essential features that meet the needs of its users. Its blend of portability, performance, and compatibility set a precedent for future laptop designs, making it a noteworthy model in the history of personal computers.
