The remote console is identical to the local management cons ol e e xcept that it exists
on a system without the HP OpenView Network Node Manager databases and back-
ground processes. The remote console connects to the management station for
services and database operations. It runs on the Windows NT Server operating
system.

Figure 1-1 provides an example of a network configuration, and Figure 1-2 shows the
flow of data through the configuration.
All Dell servers that are managed with HP OpenView Network Node Manager must
have the managed node component installed on them. This component monitors var-
ious hardware systems on the server for information such as temperature readings,
redundant array of independent disks (RAID) status, and so on.
Each managed node then sends its reading to the management station, which pre-
sents the data in a user interface. In addition, the management station can be set up
to notify the network administrator by digital page or electronic mail when a critical
event occurs on one of the managed nodes.
The remote console component allows remote viewing of the data that is available at
the management station. Multiple remote consoles can be installed, but onl y a s in gle
instance can be active at a time.
