3. Playback
Optimizing the Picture/Sound Quality
Automatic Tracking
After having inserted a cassette and started playback, the
recorder adjusts automatically for the best possible picture
quality (Auto Tracking).
During this adjustment, the indication:"
AUTO-TRACKING
" appears
in the display of the recorder and the picture/ sound quality
may change.
Manually
Tracking (track position) can also be adjusted with the
STRACKINGAbuttons on the remote control.
If the picture jumps or scrolls when playing back tapes re-
corded with another recorder, press the Zbutton, the
numbered buttons 8511and then the Obutton.
"
ON
"appears briefly in the display of the recorder.
Playback of Long-Play Recordings
When playing back a long-play recording, the recorder auto-
matically switches to long-play playback mode.

LP
"appears in the display of the recorder.
Playback of NTSC Recordings
When playing back NTSC recordings, the recorder automatical-
ly adjusts to this system (chrominance subcarrier 4.43 MHz).

NTSC
" appears in the display of the recorder.
The display of the total playing time automatically switches to
the 5-digit tape length display.
Playback of S-VHS recordings
When playing back cassettes recorded with the S-VHS for-
mat, the recorder automatically adjusts to this system.

If the picture quality is poor, press the
S-VHSbutton.

The TV set must also be equipped for this standard.
It is possible that the colour may differ from that of the
original during high-speed playback, reverse playback,
slow-motion playback, freeze-frame or the picture search
function, as well as when playing back SECAM or NTSC
recordings.
Playback of SECAM Recordings
When playing back SECAM recordings, press the Ubutton.
"
SEC
" appears in the display of the recorder.
When you have finished playing back the SECAM recording,
press the Ubutton; the indication "
SEC
" disappears from
the display.
Optimizing the Picture Definition (Crispening)
Automatisch (Automatic Contour Control)
After you have inserted a cassette and started playback, the
recorder automatically adjusts to the optimum picture defini-
tion.
Manually
Press the
“
PICTURE button.
"
PICT
"appears in the display of the recorder.
By repeatedly pressing the ERbuttons, you can
manually adjust the picture to suit your personal taste. Then
press the
OK button.
The ACC function can be re-activated by pressing the
“
PICTURE
and
OK buttons.
Selecting the Audio Track
When playing back cassettes with stereo or two-channel
recordings, you can select the desired audio track.
Stereo (HiFi – helical track) = Basic setting of the recorder;
the following indication appears in the display of the recor-
der: ).
Pressing the jbutton once or twice selects the following:
Audio track 1 – "
1
" appears in the display of the recorder;
Audio track 2 – "
2
" appears in the display of the recorder;
Mono/longitudinal track – no display;
When in mixed mode (HiFi – helical track – and mono-/longi-
tudinal track, for checking dubbed cassettes), "
MIX
" appears
in the display of the recorder.
The TV set must also be equipped for this colour standard.
This recorder is provided with numerous playback conven-
ience functions.
These convenience functions can be controlled easily with the
jog-knob (inner knob) and the shuttle-ring (outer ring) on the
front of the recorder.
These convenience functions are very helpful and user-
friendly if you wish to edit your recordings electronically
(joining or inserting new pictures or scenes to or into existing
recordings).
The following settings are possible:
You can adjust the playback speed – forwards and reverse –
with the shuttle-ring.
You can advance the individual frames – forwards and rever-
se – with the jog-knob.
You can adjust the slow motion speed – forwards and reverse
– with the jog-knob.
Various Playback Speeds*
Start playback by pressing the Jbutton.
During playback, turn the shuttle-ring to change the playback
speed (see illustration).
If the picture trembles or appears unsteady during the
playback function of freeze-frame, forward slow-motion
and forward playback at twice the normal speed, you can
opti-mize the picture quality as follows.
Pull out the second level of the remote control.
On the remote control press the Zbutton, the num-
bered buttons 8528and the Obutton.
»JITTER«
appears in the display of the recorder.
Then adjust the picture with the Wor Qbutton to suit
your personal taste, and terminate the adjustment with the
Obutton.
