Hearth extension required to protect combustible floors in front of appliance.

An 12 inch minimum hearth extension must be constructed of non-combustible material.

E. Hearth Extension

The base of the fireplace may sit on a combustible surface. The area in front of the fireplace must be protected by a non- combustible hearth extension, unless the fireplace is raised a minimum of 3 inches above the combustible floor or hearth. See figures 3.5 and 3.6.
