CAUTION:

The use of a pump protector is recommended to prevent cold weather damage during storage over the winter months.

CHECKING/CLEANING AIR FILTER

See Figure 20.

A dirty air filter will cause starting difficulty, loss of perfor- mance, and shorten the life span of the engine. Check the air filter monthly. For best performance, replace the air filter at least once a year.

nRemove the wing nut, then remove the air filter cover.

nRemove the second wing nut, then remove the air filter unit.

nIf the foam filter element is dirty, remove it from the air filter unit. Clean the foam filter element with warm soapy water. Rinse and let dry.

NOTE: If the air filter unit is dirty or damaged, it must be replaced. If the foam filter element is damaged, it should also be replaced.

nApply a light coat of engine oil to the foam filter element, then squeeze it out.

nReplace the foam filter element on the air filter unit.

nReplace the air filter unit and reinstall wing nut to se- cure.

nReplace the air filter cover and reinstall second wing nut to secure.

NOTE: Do not run the engine without both the foam filter element and the air filter. Rapid engine wear will result.
