2.1Safety/Handling

“SafetyandHandling”ofthepersonaltransporterrequiresthe
closeattentionofthepersonaltransporteruseraswellasthe
assistant.Thismanualpointsoutthemostcommonproceduresand
techniquesinvolvedinthesafeoperationandmaintenanceofthe
personaltransporter.Itisimportanttopracticeandmasterthese
safetechniquesuntilyouarecomfortableinmaneuveringaroundthe
frequentlyencounteredarchitecturalbarriers.
Usethisinformationonlyasa“basic”guide.Thetechniquesthatare
discussedonthefollowingpageshavebeenusedsuccessfullybymany.
UsersandassistantsMUSTbeawarethatthehandlingand
maneuverabilitycharacteristicsofrearwheeldrivepersonal
transportersareinherentlydifferentfromcenterandfrontwheel
drivewheelchairs.Handlingandmaneuverabilitydifferenceswillbe
mostnoticeablewhentravelingupordownrampsandslopesorover
obstaclesandroughterrainasthismayshifttheuserscenterofmass
resultingindecreasedstability.ALWAYSreducespeedandwearthe
seatpositioningstrapwhendrivingundertheseconditions.
Individualpersonaltransporterusersoftendevelopskillstodealwith
dailylivingactivitiesthatmaydifferfromthosedescribedinthis
manual.Invacarerecognizesandencourageseachindividualtotry
whatworksbestforhim/herinovercomingarchitecturalobstacles
thattheymayencounter.Howeverallwarningsandcautionsgiven
inthismanualMUSTbefollowed.Techniquesinthismanualarea
startingpointforthenewpersonaltransporteruserandassistant
with“safety”asthemostimportantconsiderationforall.
Invacarestronglyrecommendsthatinitialuseofthepersonal
transporterbesupervisedbyanassistant.
WARNING!
Ifpersonaltransporterstartssmoking,sparking,or
burning,discontinueusingthepersonaltransporter
andseekserviceIMMEDIATELY.
ALWAYSwearyourseatpositioningstrap.Theseat
positioningstrapisapositioningbeltonly.Itisnot
designedforuseasasafetydevicewithstandinghigh
stressloadssuchasautooraircraftsafetybelts.
Ifsignsofwearappear,beltMUSTbereplaced
IMMEDIATELY.
DONOTleavethepowerbuttonOnwhenentering
orexitingthepersonaltransporter.
DONOTgoupordownrampsortraverseslopes
greaterthan6°.
NEVERleaveanunoccupiedpersonaltransporter
unattendedonanincline.
DONOTattempttomoveupordownaninclinewith
water,iceoroilfilm.
Dodetermineandestablishyourparticularsafety
limitsbypracticingbending,reachingandtransferring
activitiesinthepresenceofaqualifiedhealthcare
professionalbeforeattemptingactiveuseofthe
personaltransporter.
DONOTattempttoreachobjectsifyouhaveto
moveforwardinyourseat.
ALWAYSshiftyourweightinthedirectionyou
areturning.DONOTshiftyourweightinthe
oppositedirectionoftheturn.Shiftingyourweight
intheoppositedirectionoftheturnmaycausethe
insidedrivewheeltolosetractionandthepersonal
transportertotipover.
