In [Auto flash + Red-eye Reduction] and [Flash On + Red-eye Reduction] modes, the flash discharges once to make the pupils of the subject’s eyes smaller shortly before the main flash discharges to take the picture.

The flash mode changes each time the button is pressed and the icon is displayed on the LCD monitor.
