The AS/400 HTML Gateway feature is part of the Internet Connection for an AS/400, which will have to be installed and configured. Once this is done, any application on the AS/400 can be viewed over HTTP.
The Internet Connection feature of the AS/400 operates under OS/400, Version 3, Release 2 or later. It enables the OS/400 to deploy a set of functions, which support the World Wide Web. These functions are:
•Hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) server based on the TCP/IP protocol can provide objects to any local or remote Web browser. The HTTP server includes support for the DB2 integrated database.
•5250/HTML Workstation Gateway enables all Web browsers to be clients of existing 5250 applications without making any changes to the application, including a logging ability to track HTTP server use.
•Post Office Protocol Version 3 (POP3) server enables mail serving in a TCP/IP environment.
•Offers serial connections of SLIP support.
The 5250 HTML Workstation Gateway should not be confused with the HTTP Web Server. The 5250 HTML Workstation Gateway converts 5250 data stream to HTML and the HTTP Web Server lets the AS/400 system to act as a World Wide Web server. These are two separate servers on the AS/400.
The 5250 HTML Workstation Gateway lets you think that the browser is logically attached to the AS/400 systems even if each transaction between the browser and the AS/400 is disconnected. The AS/400 server maintains the virtual terminal API connection up or until the browser logs off or the inactivity
