SAFELIMITS OF OPERATION
PolkAudiospecifies the recommendedamplificationrange
foreachof its passive (non-amplified)loudspeakers.Typically
thatspecificationwillbe expressed as a rangeof power such
as20-200W (per channel). Itis important to understand
whatthosenumbers mean whenchoosing a receiveror
amplifierforyour Polk loudspeakers.The lowernumber
indicatesthelowest continuousrated power thatwill yield
acceptableperformanceina typical listeningenvironment.
Thehighernumber indicatesthe highest per channelpower
thatshouldbe used with yourPolk speakers. Thatnumber
shouldnotbe confused witha “Power Handling” specification
anditdoes not imply that the speakerwill safely handle
thatfullamount of power on a long-termbasis. We specify
awiderange of power ratingsbecause not all electronics
manufacturersusethe samemethod for rating power.
Infact,high quality lower-ratedamplifierssound better and
playlouderthan low qualityunits with a higher powerrating.
Automobilehorsepowerisa good analogy. Your carprobably
hasfarmore horsepower thanit needs for your dailycommute
andislikely capable of goingwell over 120mph (190km/hr).
Havingthatextra power is goodfor on-ramp acceleration
anddangeravoidance (likegetting away from brain-eating
zombies)butthat doesn’tmean that it is advisableto operate
yourcaron North American highwaysat full powerand
maximumspeedfor an extendedperiod of time. Justask
yourlocalstate trooper ifyou are in doubt. Similarly,we
recommendusingamplifiersand receivers withrated power
abovethePower Handling limitsof our speakers because
havingextrapower availablefor short term peaksis conducive
tobettersound quality, maximumdynamic rangeand effortless
highvolumeoutput. But we stronglyurge you not touse the
fullpowerof your amplifieror receiver for dailylistening.
Loudspeakerscanbe damagedwhen an amplifier,regardless
ofitswattage, is made to playat higher listeninglevels than
itspowercan clearly produce.Operation at thislevel can result
inveryhigh levels of audibledistortion originatingin the
amplifier,whichcan add a harsh,gritty sound toyour listening
material.Ifyou hear distortion—turnthe volume down
orrisk damagingyour speakers. You candamage just about
anyspeaker,regardlessof power rating, if youdrive an
