GUIDE BAR AND CHAIN OIL
Thebar and chain require lubrication. The
chain oiler provides lubrication to the
chainandguidebar.Besuretofillthebar
oiltank before each cuttingsession. Lack
of oil will quicklyruin the bar and chain.
Toolittle oil will ca use overheating shown
by smoke coming from the chain and/or
discoloration of the bar. For max imum
guide bar and chain life, we recommend
you use Poulan chain saw bar oil. If
Poulan bar oil is not available, you may
use a goodgrade SAE 30 oil until you are
ableto obtain Poulan brand.Use a funnel
to fill the tank. Replace oil cap securely.
Check oil level after every 15 minutes of
operation.

buttonwith your right hand thumb.

CUTTING METHODS
OPERATINGTIPS
SCheck chain tensionbefore first use
and after1 minute of operation. See
CHECK CHAIN TENSION in the MAIN-
TENANCE section.
SCutwood only. Do not cut metal, plas-
tics,masonry, non-wood building ma-
terials,etc.
SStopthe saw if the chain strikes a for-
eignobject. Inspectthe saw and repair
partsas nec essary.
SKeep the chain out of dirt and sand.
Evena small amount of dirt will quickly
dulla chain and increase the possibil-
ity of kickback.
SPractice cuttinga few small logs using
thefo llowing steps. This will help yo ug et
the “feel”of using your saw before you
begin a major sawingope ration.
SSqueeze triggerswitch and allow unit
to reach fulls peed beforecu tting.
SBegin cutting with the saw frame
against thelog.
SKeep themotor at full speed the en-
tire time you are cutting.
SRelease the trigger switchas soon
asthe cut is completed, allowing the
motor to stop.
SKeepthe cord away from the cutting
area. Position cord so it will not be
caughton branches and the like dur-
ing cutting.
STo avoidlosing control when cut is
complete, do not put pressure on
saw at end of cut.
SStop motorbefore setting saw down.
TREE FELLING TECHNIQUES
WARNING : Check for broken or
dead branches whichcan fall while cut-
ting causing serious injury.Do not cut
near buildings or electricalwires if you
donot know the direction of tree fall, nor
cut at night since you willnot be ableto
see well, nor during bad weather such
asrain, snow, or strong winds, etc. Ifthe
tree does make contact withany utility
line, the utility company should be noti-
fiedimmediately.
SCarefully plan yoursa wingoperation in
advance.
SClear the work area. You need a clear
areaall around the tree so you can have
secure footing.
SThe chain saw operator should keep
on the uphillside of the terrain as the
tree is likely to roll or slide downhill af-
terit is felled.
SStudy the natural conditions that can
cause the tree to fall in a partic ular direc-
tion, such as:
SThe wind directionand speed.
SThe lean of the tree. The lean of a
treemight notbe a pparentdue to un-
evenor sloping terrain. Use a plumb
orlevel to determine the direction of
treelean.
SWeightand branches on one side.
SSurroundingtrees and obstacles.
SLook for decay and rot. If the trunk is
rotted,it can snap andfall toward the
operator.
SMake sure there is enough room for
the tree to fall. Maintain a distance of
2-1/2tree lengths fromthe nearest per-
sonor other objects. Noise can drown
out a warning call.
