LIMBING AND PRUNING

WARNING: Be alert for andguard
against kickback. Do not allow the moving
chain to contact any other branches or ob-
jects at the nose of the guide bar w hen limb-
ingor pruning. Allowingsuch contact can re-
sult in serious injury.
WARNING: Nev er climb into a tree
to limb or prune. Do not stand on ladders,
platforms,a log, or in any position w hich can
cause you to lose your balance or control of
thesaw.
IMPORTANTPOINTS
SWork slowly, keeping both hands firmly
grippedon the saw. Maintainsec urefoot-
ingand balanc e.
SWatch out for springpoles. Springpoles
are small size limbs which can catch the
sawc hain and whip toward you or pull you
off balance. Use extreme c aution when
cutting small size limbs.
SBe alert for springback. Watch out for
branches that are bent or under pressure.
Avoid being struck by the branch or the
sawwhen the tens ion in the wood fibers is
released.
SKeep a clear work area. Frequentlyclear
branches out of the way to avoid tripping
over them.

LIMBING

SAlwayslimb a tree after it is cut dow n. Only
thencan limbing be done s afely and prop-
erly.
SLeave the larger limbs underneath the
felledtree to support t he tree as you work.
SStartat the base of the felled tr ee and work
toward the top, cutting branches and
limbs. Removesmall limbs with one c ut.
SKeepthe tr ee between you and the chain.
Cut from the side of the tree opposite the
branch you are cutting.
SRemove larger, supporting branches with
thecutting techniques desc ribed in BUCK-
ING WITHOUTA SUPPO RT.
SAlways use an overcut to cut small and
freely hanging limbs. Undercutting could
cause limbs to fall and pinch the saw.

PRUNING

WARNING: Limit pruning tolimbs
shoulder height or below. Do not cut if
branchesar e higher than your shoulder. Get
apr ofessional to do the job.
SMake your fist cut 1/3 of the way
through the bottom of the limb.
SNext make a 2nd cut all the way
through the limb. Then cut a third
overcutleaving a 1 to 2 inch (2.5 --5 c m)
collar from the truck of the tree.
