A hisztogram egy olyan grafikon amely megjeleníti a fényképen a fény eloszlását. Amennyiben a hisztogram kiugró értéket mutat a bal oldalon, úgy a fénykép alulexponált és sötétnek látszik.

Ha a grafikon jobb oldalán látható kiemelkedő érték, akkor a fénykép túlexponált és kiégett. A grafikon csúcsainak magassága a színinformációkkal van összefüggésben. Minél több található az adott színből a képen, annál magasabb a grafikonon látható csúcs.
