Understanding Program Rating Categories

Understanding Ratings

The following list describes the rating categories and codes that are associated with
movies and TV programs in the United States.
Rating Description
TVY The program is appropriate for children of all ages, and is specifically
designed for children ages 2 through 6 years.
TVY7 The program is appropriate for children age 7 years or older. This rating
may include the code FV, indicating mild fantasy or comedy violence.
GThe program is appropriate for viewers of all ages.
PG Parental guidance suggested. The program contains material that parents
may find unsuitable for young children. Additional codes that may be
included with the rating are:
VSome violence
SSome sexual situations
PG-13 Parental guidance suggested. Parents can find some program material
unsuitable for children under 13 years of age. Additional codes may be
included with the rating.
TV14 Parents strongly cautioned. Parents may find some program material to
be unsuitable for children under 14 years of age. Additional codes that
may be included with the rating are:
VIntense violence
SIntense sexual situations
LStrong Indecent language
DSuggestive dialog
MA Mature audience. The program is designed for an adult audience. Parents
may find program material unsuitable for children under 17 years.
Additional codes that may be included with the rating are:
VGraphic violence
SExplicit sexual situations
LCrude or indecent language
RRestricted to adult audiences only. The program contains material that is
unsuitable for children.
NC17 Those under 18 are never admitted (movie theatres).
NR The program is not rated.
