Thank you for choosing the ICF-M33RDS!

It will give you many hours of reliable service and listening pleasure.

Before operating the radio, please read these instructions thoroughly and retain them for future reference.

Features

What is RDS ?

The Radio Data System (RDS) is a digital information system developed for radio by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), and was introduced in 1987. Using the 57 kHz sub-carrier for FM broadcasting, RDS enables you to receive a variety of information, such as station names and traffic information.

The availability of RDS data depends on your location. Hence, there may be areas where you cannot benefit from some of the following features:

Other Features

Setting the Clock

When batteries are first installed in the unit, “0:00” flashes in the display.

To set the clock, the radio should be turned off.

1Press SLEEP/CLOCK to stop “0:00” flashing in the display.2While holding down SLEEP/CLOCK,turn TUNE/TIME SET to set the clock to the current time.

When you turn TUNE/TIME SET to or , the time readout in the display increases or decreases, respectively, in one-second steps. Turning it toor causes the readout to rapidly increase or decrease, respectively.

When you release SLEEP/CLOCK, the clock starts operating and “:” begins to flash.

•To check the current time while listening to the radio, switch STATION NAME to CLOCK. The current time appears in the display.

•You can also set the current time through automatic synchronization with RDS data using the CT function. (See “Setting the Clock with the CT Function”.)

Operating the Radio

Manual Tuning

1Press POWER.2Adjust VOL (volume).

3Press BAND to select the band. Repeated pressing of BAND changes the band in the following order:

FM1* FM2* AM/LW

*Both FM1 and FM2 refer to the same FM waveband and are differentiated solely to enable more than one station to be assigned to a preset button. (See “Preset Tuning”.)

4Turn TUNE/TIME SET upward or downward until you locate the frequency of your desired station.

When you turn TUNE/TIME SET to or , the frequency readout in the display increases or decreases,

respectively. Turning it to or causes the readout to rapidly increase or decrease, respectively.

•To turn off the radio, press POWER. The display shows the current time even when the radio is turned off.

Setting the Sleep Timer

By using the sleep timer function, you can fall asleep to the sound of the radio. The function, when activated, turns the radio off after 60 minutes.

•When you release SLEEP/CLOCK, the previous display comes on again.

•To turn off the sleep timer before the end of the timer duration, press POWER.

•When you press SLEEP/CLOCK while the timer has been activated, the elapsed time will be erased and the timer duration will begin from the start.

Using the RDS

Function

In this radio, the following functions are available for receiving RDS data:

Displaying the Station Name

You can set the unit to display the name of the tuned-in station.

1Press BAND to select the FM band. (You can select either FM1 or FM2.)2Tune in to the desired station.

When the radio is receiving RDS data, “RDS” and the name of the station transmitting the data appear in the display. If no RDS data is received, “RDS” automatically goes off.

Notes

•RDS data can only be received on the FM band.

•The RDS function of this radio will not be activated if the tuned-in FM station does not transmit RDS data.

The function may also not work properly in areas where RDS transmissions are in an experimental stage.

Locating Better Reception

Some broadcasters, such as the BBC, broadcast on several frequencies. The ALTERNATIVE SEARCH function enables the unit, through AF

Receiving Traffic

Information

The TRAFFIC INFO function searches and places the unit on a standby mode to receive traffic information facilitated by the EON* network, through detecting the TP (Traffic Program) and TA (Traffic Announcement) signals in the RDS data.

When traffic information is received, the unit automatically switches from the regular radio broadcast of the tuned-in station to the incoming traffic message. After the message, the unit switches back to the regular radio broadcast.

1Press BAND to select the FM band. (You can select either FM 1 or FM 2). If the station selected transmits RDS data, “RDS ” lights up.

2Press TRAFFIC INFO for “ ” to light up along with “RDS”.The unit is now on standby to receive traffic information.

•When traffic information is received, “ ” starts to flash, and the unit switches over to the traffic information.

•To stop the reception of traffic information and to return to your tuned-in station, press

TRAFFIC INFO.

Notes

•If the tuned-in station is not a traffic information station nor a station in an EON network, a beep sounds.

•Switching the band from FM to AM while

“ ” is lit in the display causes “ ” to

disappear. “ ” does not come back on when the band is switched back to FM or if the unit is turned off and then on again.

•When POWER is turned off, traffic informa- tion will not be received.

*Enhanced Other Networks–EON

An EON network consists of a group of stations whereby a listener, who is tuned in to a participating station using a RDS compatible radio, can automatically receive RDS data transmitted by other stations in the network.

This unit is equipped to receive RDS traffic information provided by EON networks.

Setting the Clock Using the CT Function

The CT function of the RDS enables the built-in clock of the unit to automatically synchronize with CT data being transmitted.

Precautions

•Do not open the unit. Refer servicing to qualified personnel only.

•Operate the unit using only the power sources given in “Specifications”.

•For AC operation, use the AC power adaptor recommended for this unit; do not use any other type.

•Avoid exposure to temperature extremes, direct sunlight, moisture, sand, dust, or mechanical shock. Never leave the unit in a car parked in the sun.

•The name plate indicating operating voltage, etc., is located at the rear.

•Should any solid object or liquid fall into the unit, disconnect the AC power adaptor or remove the batteries, and have the unit checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further.

•Since a strong magnet is used for the speaker, keep personal credit cards using magnetic coding or spring-wound watches away from the unit to prevent possible damage from the magnet.

•When the casing becomes soiled, clean it with a soft cloth dampened with mild detergent solution. Never use abrasive cleansers or chemical solvents, as they may mar the casing.

•In vehicles or buildings, radio reception may be difficult or noisy. Try listening near a window.

Troubleshooting Guide

Should any problem persist after you have made the following checks, consult your nearest Sony dealer.

The front panel buttons do not operate at all.

•“H” comes on in the display. Press HOLD for “H” to disappear.

Display is dim, or no indication is displayed.

•Weak batteries.

•The unit is being used in extremely high or low temperatures or in a place with excessive moisture.

Poor or weak reception.

•Weak batteries

•In a vehicle or in a building, place your unit near a window.

No sound comes on when a preset button is pressed.

•The station has not been preset.

•The preset station is erased from the memory. Preset the station again.

Qu’est-ce que le RDS?

Le RDS (Radio Data System) ou radioguidage est un système numérique d’informations radio développé par l’UER (Union Européenne de Radiodiffusion) et introduit en 1987. Utilisant la sous-porteuse de 57 kHz des émetteurs FM, il permet de recevoir tout un éventail d’informations, comme les noms des stations et les bulletins routiers.

Toutefois, la disponibilité du système d’informations RDS varie en fonction des zones de réception. Suivant les cas, vous ne pourrez peut-être pas recevoir certains des services suivants.

Réglage de l’horloge

“0:00” clignote sur l’afficheur quand les piles sont installées la première fois.

Réglez l’horloge seulement quand la radio est éteinte.

2Tout en maintenant la pression sur la touche SLEEP/CLOCK, tournez la molette TUNE/TIME SET pour mettre l’horloge à l’heure.

Chaque fois que vous tournez la molette TUNE/TIME SET versou,le temps affiché diminue ou

augmente respectivement d’une seconde. Quand vous tournez la molette versou , le temps affiché diminue ou augmente rapidement. Quand vous relâchez la touche SLEEP/ CLOCK, l’horloge se met en marche et “:” commence à clignoter.

•Si vous voulez vérifier l’heure actuelle tout en écoutant la radio, réglez le commutateur STATION NAME sur CLOCK. L’heure actuelle apparaîtra sur l’afficheur.

•Le RDS peut aussi être mis à profit pour régler l’horloge à l’aide de l’autoréglage de l’horloge de la fonction CT. (Voir “Utilisation des fonctions RDS”)

Réglage du temporisateur

•Quand vous relâchez la touche SLEEP/CLOCK, l’affichage précédent réapparaît.

•Pour mettre hors service le temporisateur avant la fin du compte à rebours, appuyez sur

POWER.

•Si vous appuyez sur la touche SLEEP/CLOCK alors que le temporisateur est en service, le temps écoulé sera effacé et le compte à rebours reprendra à partir du début.

Utilisation des fonctions RDS

Les fonctions suivantes exploitant les données RDS sont disponibles avec cette radio:

Affichage du nom de la chaîne de programme

Cette fonction permet d’afficher le nom de la station actuellement accordée.

1Appuyez sur BAND pour sélectionner la gamme FM (vous pouvez choisir FM1 ou FM2).

2Accordez la station souhaitée.

Si la radio reçoit des données RDS, “RDS” et le nom de la station transmettant les données RDS apparaîtront sur l’afficheur. Si aucune donnée RDS n’est reçue, “RDS” s’éteindra automatiquement.

Réception

d’informations

routières

Cette fonction permet la recherche et la surveillance de la diffusion d’informations routières simplifiées par le réseau EON*, grâce aux données RDS de TP (Programmes routiers) et de TA (Annonces routières).

Quand des informations routières sont reçues, la radio change de mode automatiquement et passe de la réception des programmes réguliers de la station accordée à celle du bulletin routier. Après l’annonce, la radio revient en mode de réception normale.

1Appuyez sur BAND pour sélectionner la gamme FM (vous pouvez choisir FM1 ou FM 2). Si la station accordée transmet des données RDS, “RDS ” s’allumera.

2Appuyez sur la touche TRAFFIC INFO de telle façon que “ ” et “RDS” s’allument.La radio est alors en mode de surveil- lance des informations routières.

•Quand des informations routières sont reçues,

“ ” commence à clignoter et vous pouvez écouter le bulletin routier.

•Pour arrêter la réception des informations routières et revenir à la station accordée précédemment, appuyez sur TRAFFIC INFO.

Remarques

•Quand la station que vous êtes en train d’écouter n’est ni une station diffusant des informations routières ni une station avec des données EON, un bip retentit.

•Quand vous passez de la gamme FM à la

gamme AM alors que “ ” est allumé sur

l’afficheur, “ ” disparaît. “ ” ne revient pas quand vous repassez à la gamme FM ou éteignez puis rallumez la radio.

•Si vous éteignez la radio avec la touche POWER, les informations routières ne seront pas reçues.

*Réseaux alternatifs étendus EON

Un réseau EON est constitué d’un groupe de stations qui permet à l’auditeur, en train d’écouter une station de ce réseau à l’aide d’une radio RDS, de recevoir automatiquement des données RDS transmises par d’autres stations du réseau.

Cette radio est équipée pour recevoir les informations routières RDS fournies par les réseaux EON.

Réglage de l’horloge à l’aide de la fonction CT

La fonction CT du RDS permet à l’horloge intégrée de se synchroniser automatiquement avec les données CT reçues.

Précautions

•Ne pas ouvrir le coffret. Les réparations doivent être effectuées par un technicien qualifié uniquement.

•Faites fonctionner votre radio seulement sur les sources d’alimentation indiquées dans les “Caractéristiques techniques”.

•Pour le fonctionnement sur le secteur, utilisez l’adaptateur d’alimentation recommandé pour cet appareil à l’exclusion de tout autre.

•Evitez d’exposer la radio à une température extrême, à la lumière directe du soleil, à l’humidité, au sable, à la poussière ou à un choc d’origine mécanique. Ne jamais la laisser dans une voiture garée en plein soleil.

•La plaque du fabricant indiquant la tension de fonctionnement, etc. est située à l’arrière de la radio.

•Si un objet solide ou un liquide pénètre à l’intérieur de la radio, débranchez l’adaptateur secteur ou retirez les piles et faites vérifier l’appareil par un technicien qualifié avant de le remettre en service.

•Comme un aimant puissant est utilisé pour le haut-parleur, tenez les cartes de crédit utilisant un code magnétique ou les montres à ressort à l’écart de la radio pour éviter tout dommage dû à l’aimant.

•Pour le nettoyage du coffret, utilisez un chiffon doux légèrement imprégné d’une solution détergente neutre. Ne jamais utiliser de tampons abrasifs ou de solvants chimiques, car ils pourraient endommager la finition.

•Dans un véhicule ou un bâtiment, la réception radio peut être difficile ou parasitée. Ecoutez près d’une fenêtre si possible.

Guide de dépannage

Si un problème quelconque persistait après que vous aurez passé en revue les points suivants, veuillez consulter votre revendeur Sony le plus proche.

Les touches du panneau avant ne fonctionnent pas du tout.

•“H” est affiché. Appuyez sur la touche HOLD de telle façon que “H” disparaisse.

L’affichage est peu clair, ou aucune indication n’est affichée.

•Les piles sont faibles.

•La radio est utilisée dans des conditions de température extrêmes ou dans un lieu trop humide.

Le son est faible ou la réception est mauvaise.

•Les piles sont faibles.

•A l’intérieur d’un véhicule ou d’un bâtiment, écoutez près d’une fenêtre.

Aucun son n’est audible quand une touche de préréglage est enfoncée.

•La station n’a pas été préréglée.

•La mémoire de la station a été effacée. Préréglez la station de nouveau.

Choosing the Power Source

Knowing When to Replace the Batteries

•When the batteries are weak, the sound becomes weak and distorted. When the batteries are completely exhausted, the radio is inoperative and “i” appears in the display. Replace the batteries with new ones.

•Once “i” comes on in the display, it remains even after new batteries are installed. To remove “i” from the display, press POWER.

•Before replacing the batteries, make sure the radio is turned off. Replace the batteries within one minute. Otherwise, the clock setting and preset stations could be erased. In this case, set the clock and preset the stations again.

Note

•When the unit is not being used for an extended period, remove the batteries to avoid damage from battery leakage and corrosion.

Connect the AC power adaptor AC-E30HG (not supplied) to the DC IN 3 V jack, and plug it into a wall outlet.

Notes on the AC power adaptor

•When the AC power adaptor is not used, be sure to unplug it both from the DC IN 3 V jack and from the wall outlet.

•Use only the AC adaptor AC-E30HG (not supplied). Do not use any other AC power adaptor.

Polarity of the plug

• To improve radio reception

FM: Extend the telescopic antenna.

AM/LW: Rotate the unit horizontally for optimum reception. A ferrite bar antenna is built in the unit.

•When you tune in to an FM station, the display may change from the frequency readout to the name of the station. This happens particularly for FM stations that carry RDS data in their frequencies. (See “Displaying the Station Name”.)

Changing the Display Mode

You can change the display mode by setting the STATION NAME switch to either CLOCK or

STATION.STATION NAME switch set to CLOCK:

•When you turn on the power, the display shows the tuned-in frequency for a few seconds, and then switches to the current time while the radio is on. To check the radio frequency or station name, switch STATION NAME to STATION.

•You can tune in to a station by turning TUNE/ TIME SET to the desired frequency. The display shows the frequency for a few seconds before reverting to the current time.

•When the unit is receiving RDS traffic information (see “Receiving Traffic Informa- tion”), the display shows the name of the broadcasting station for a few seconds before reverting to the current time.

Preset Tuning

You can preset up to 10 stations in FM (5 stations in FM1, 5 stations in FM2), and 5 stations in AM /LW.

Presetting a Station

Example: To preset a station on the FM 90 MHz frequency onto preset button 2 of FM2.

1Press POWER.

2Press BAND to select FM2.

3Tune in to the FM 90 MHz frequency. Press and hold down the desired preset button. (2, in this case.)

“2”, the preset button number, flashes in the display. A beep sounds, and “2” stops flashing and remains in the display to indicate the presetting is successful.

•To preset other stations, repeat the above steps.

•To replace the station assigned to a preset button, follow the above steps and, in step 3, press the preset button you wish to reset.

Tuning in to a Preset Station

1Press POWER.

2Press BAND to select the band.

3Press the desired preset button.

4Adjust VOL (volume).

(List of Alternative Frequencies) data, to locate another frequency with a stronger signal, and to automatically switch to that frequency.

1Press and hold down ALTERNATIVE SEARCH until the unit locates a better reception.

If no alternative frequency is found, “NO AF” appears in the display.

Note

•When a station that transmits RDS data is preset, its AF data is recorded in the memory of the unit. Hence, when the preset station is tuned in and no RDS data is received, the

ALTERNATIVE SEARCH function automatically scans for RDS data among the other frequencies of the station through the AF data. The display of the unit will show the rapidly changing frequencies during the search. If a frequency with RDS data is detected, the unit switches to that frequency. If RDS data is not detected, the unit reverts to the frequency initially tuned in.

To cancel the function, press CLOCK AUTO ADJUST. “ ”disappears in the display.

Notes

•If the unit does not receive CT data after 2 minutes, “NO CT” appears in the display. The function is then automatically cancelled.

•The current time on your unit, set through this mode, will be as accurate as that of the CT data received.

•The CT function may not work in some areas or on certain frequencies. In such a case,

“ ” does not come on in the display.

Using Other

Functions

LIGHT Function

To view the display in the dark:

1Press LIGHT.The light on the unit comes on for 10 seconds.

When you operate your unit while the light is on, the light stays on for longer than 10 seconds.

HOLD Function

To prevent accidental operation of the unit:

1Press HOLD.

“H” appears in the display to indicate all the function buttons are locked and inoperative.

Remplacement des piles

•Lorsque les piles deviennent faibles, le son s’affaiblit lui aussi et présente des distorsions. Quand les piles sont complètement épuisées, la radio ne fonctionne plus et “i” apparaît sur l’afficheur. Remplacez les piles par des neuves.

•“i” reste affiché même après le remplacement des piles. Pour faire disparaître “i”, appuyez sur POWER.

•Avant de remplacer les piles, assurez-vous que la radio est bien éteinte. Remplacez les piles en l’espace d’une minute, sinon le réglage de l’horloge et les préréglages des stations seront effacés. Le cas échéant, remettez l’horloge à l’heure et préréglez les stations.

Remarque

•Si vous prévoyez de ne pas utiliser la radio pendant longtemps, enlevez les piles pour éviter tout dommage dû à l’électrolyte des piles et à la corrosion.

Remarques sur l’adaptateur d’alimentation secteur

•Si vous n’avez pas l’intention d’utiliser l’adaptateur secteur, n’oubliez pas de le débrancher de la prise DC IN 3 V et de la prise murale.

•Utilisez seulement l’adaptateur secteur AC- E30HG d’adaptatuer (non fourni) à l’exclusion de tout autre modèle.

• Pour améliorer la réception radio

FM: Déployez complètement l’antenne télescopique.

AM/GO: Tournez la radio à l’horizontale pour une réception optimale. Une barre de ferrite intégrée sert d’antenne.

•Lorsque vous accordez une station FM, il est possible que le nom de la station remplace la fréquence sur l’afficheur. Cela est particulièrement vrai dans le cas des stations FM qui émettent un signal RDS auxiliaire. (Voir “Affichage du nom de la chaîne de programme”.)

Changement du mode d’affichage

Pour changer le mode d’affichage, réglez le commutateur STATION NAME sur CLOCK (heure) ou STATION au choix.

Réglage du commutateur STATION NAME sur

CLOCK:

•Quand vous allumez la radio, la fréquence d’accord est affichée pendant quelques secondes, puis l’heure est affichée. Si vous voulez vérifier la fréquence ou le nom de la station, réglez le commutateur STATION NAME sur STATION.

•Vous pouvez accorder une station en sélectionnant la fréquence à l’aide de la molette TUNE/TIME SET. La fréquence sera affichée pendant quelques secondes, puis l’heure sera affichée de nouveau.

•Si des informations routières sont reçues (voir “Réception d’informations routières”), le nom de la station sera affiché pendant quelques secondes, puis l’heure sera affichée de nouveau.

Accord des stations préréglées

Vous pouvez prérégler jusqu’à 10 stations FM (5 stations sur FM1, 5 stations sur FM2), et 5 stations AM/GO.

Préréglage d’une station

Exemple: Pour régler FM 90 MHz sur la touche de préréglage 2 pour FM2.

1Appuyez sur la touche POWER.

2Appuyez sur la touche BAND pour sélectionner FM2.3Accordez FM 90 MHz.

Appuyez sur la touche de préréglage souhaitée en maintenant la pression (c’est à dire, dans ce cas, la touche de préréglage 2).

Le numéro de préréglage “2” clignote sur l’afficheur. Un bip de confirmation retentit et “2” s’arrête de clignoter tout en restant affiché pour indiquer que le préréglage est terminé.

Remarques

•Les données RDS peuvent être reçues seulement sur la gamme FM.

•La fonction RDS de cette radio ne sera pas activée si la station FM reçue ne diffuse pas de données RDS.

Le RDS peut aussi ne pas fonctionner correctement dans les régions où les transmissions RDS en sont encore à un stade expérimental.

Recherche des fréquences alternatives

Certaines stations telles que la BBC émettent sur plusieurs fréquences. La fonction ALTERNATIVE SEARCH permet à la radio de localiser, à partir des données AF (Liste des fréquences alterna- tives), une fréquence alternative présentant un signal plus puissant et de s’accorder automatiquement sur cette fréquence.

1Appuyez en continu sur la touche

ALTERNATIVE SEARCH jusqu’à ce que la radio localise une station dont le signal est plus clair.

Si aucune fréquence alternative n’est trouvée, “NO AF” apparaîtra sur l’afficheur.

Remarque

•Quand une station transmettant des données RDS est préréglée, ses données AF sont enregistrées dans la mémoire de la radio. Par conséquent, si la station préréglée est accordée et aucune donnée RDS n’est reçue, la fonction

ALTERNATIVE SEARCH balayera automatiquement toutes les autres fréquences de la station à la recherche de données RDS à partir des données AF. L’afficheur indiquera le changement rapide des fréquences pendant la recherche. Si une fréquence avec des données RDS est détectée, la radio s’accordera sur cette fréquence. Si des données RDS ne sont pas détectées, la radio reviendra sur la fréquence accordée initialement.

Remarques

•Si la radio ne peut pas recevoir de données CT pendant 2 minutes, “NO CT” apparaîtra sur l’afficheur et la fonction sera mise hors service automatiquement.

•L’heure de votre radio réglée dans ce mode, aura le degré de précision des données CT reçues.

•Il est possible que la fonction CT ne puisse pas être activée dans certaines régions ou pour

certaines fréquences. Dans ce cas, “ ” ne sera pas affiché.

Utilisation des autres fonctions

Fonction d’éclairage

LIGHT

Pour voir l’affichage dans le noir:

1Appuyez sur la touche LIGHT. L’afficheur sera éclairé pendant environ 10 secondes.

Si vous utilisez votre radio alors que l’éclairage est en service, l’afficheur restera éclairé plus de 10 secondes.

Fonction de blocage

HOLD

Pour éviter un fonctionnement accidentel de la radio:

1Appuyez sur la touche HOLD.

“H” apparaît sur l’afficheur pour indiquer que toutes les commandes sont bloquées et inopérantes.

Pour annuler la fonction, appuyez de nouveau sur la touche HOLD.

“H” disparaîtra de l’afficheur.

Utilisation du support

Pour voir l’afficheur à un angle optimal, soulevez le support au bas de la radio.
