felling cut. The chain brake will operate only if it has been properly maintained and the hand guard has not been modified in any way.

Check operation of chain brake

Before starting work: Run engine at idle speed, engage the chain brake (push hand guard toward bar nose). Accelerate up to full throttle for no more than 3 seconds – the chain must not rotate. The hand guard must be free from dirt and move freely.

Chain brake maintenance

The chain brake is subject to normal wear. It is necessary to have it serviced and maintained regularly by trained personnel, such as your STIHL servicing dealer, at the following intervals:

Pre-heat carburetor

NRemove the carburetor box cover

Nin the carburetor box cover, move the slide from summer position (1) to winter position (2)

Heated air is now drawn in from around the cylinder and mixed with cold air – this helps prevent carburetor icing.

Above +70 °F (20 °C), always return the slide to the position for "summer operation" again! Risk of engine malfunction – overheating!

Machines with HD filter

NReplace the HD filter with a standard filter

NReplace the carburetor box cover and tighten the knob

At temperatures below 14 °F (-10 °C) (intake air pre-heating)

Under extreme winter conditions (temperatures below 14 °F (-10 °C), powdered or drifting snow), it is recommended to break out the insert in the cover along the perforated outline using a suitable tool.

This causes only warm air from the vicinity of the cylinder to be taken in – prevents icing of air filter and carburetor.

Nif the chain saw is extremely cold (frost formation) – after starting, bring the engine up to operating temperature at increased idle speed (disengage chain brake!)

When used with pre-heating of intake air, heavier fouling of the air filter may occur – shorten cleaning intervals.
