Disabling a device

1Open the Start menu, click Control Panel then

Performance and Maintenance.

2Click the Administrative Tools icon.

3Click Computer Management and then Device

Manager.

4Select the specific device from the device category.

5In the toolbar, look to the far right for an icon of a

monitor with a strike mark through a circle on the front.

This is the disable feature.

6Click the icon.

You are given the option of disabling the device.

7Click Yes or No, whichever is appropriate.

Checking device properties

Device Manager provides a way to view the properties of a

device. Properties include the name of the manufacturer, the

type of device, the drivers installed, and the system resources

assigned to the device.

To check a device’s properties:

1Open the Start menu, click Control Panel.

2Click Performance and Maintenance, and then

Administrative Tools.

3Click the Computer Management icon.

4Click the Device Manager button.

5To view the device(s) installed, double-click the device

type.

6To view the properties, double-click the device.

The operating system displays the Device Properties dialog

box, which provides an array of tabs. They include:

Wrong Problems that are easy to fix Your program stops responding. Your program performs an illegal operation. Problems when you turn on the computer The computer will not start. The computer starts but, when you press a key, nothing happens. The computer is not accessing the hard disk or the external diskette drive. The computer displays the WARNING RESUME FAILURE message. Disk drive problems You are having trouble accessing a disk, or one or more files appear to be missing. Error-checking Your hard disk seems very slow. Your data files are damaged or corrupted. Some programs run correctly but others do not. A diskette will not go into the external diskette drive. The computer displays the Non-system disk or disk error message. The drive cannot read a diskette. DVD-ROM or multi-function drive problems You cannot access a disc in the drive. You press the disc eject button, but the drive tray does not slide out. Some discs run correctly, but others do not. Sound system problems You do not hear any sound from the computer. The computer emits a loud, high-pitched noise. Printer problems The printer will not print. The printer will not print what you see on the screen. Modem problems The modem will not receive or transmit properly.
