CUTTING SAFETY

WARNING: Ins pect the area before
each use. Remove objects (r ocks, broken
glass, nails, wire, etc.) which can be thrown
byor become entangled in line. Hard objects
candamage the trimmer head and be thrown
causing serious injury.
SUse only for trimming, scalping, mowing and
sweeping. Do not use for edging, pruning or
hedge trimming.
SKeep firm footing andbalance. Do not over-
reach.
SKeepall par ts of your body away from muffler
and spinning line. Keep engine below waist
level. A hot muffler can cause serious burns .
SCutfrom your right to your left. Cuttingon left
side of the shield will throw debris away from
the operator.
SUse only in daylight or good artificial light.
SUse only for jobs explained in this manual.

TRANSPORTING AND STORAGE

SAllow engine to cool; secure unit before s tor-
ing or transporting in vehicle.
SEmpty the fuel tank before storing or trans-
portingthe unit. Use up fuel left in the carbure -
torby s tarting the engine and letting it run until
itstops.
SStore unit and fuel in area where fuel vapors
cannotrea chs parks or open flames from wa-
ter heaters, electric motors or switches, fur-
naces, etc.
SStoreunit so line limiter blade c annotac ciden-
tallyc ause injury. The unit canbe hung by the
shaft.
SStore unit out of reach of children.
SAFETYNOTICE: Exposure to v ibrations
through prolonged use of gasoline powered
handtools could c ause blood vessel or nerve
damage in the fingers, hands, and joints of
people prone to circulation disorders or ab-
normal swellings. Prolonged use in cold
weatherhas been link ed to blood vess el dam-
agein otherwise healthy people. If s ymptoms
occur such as numbness, pain, loss of
strength, change in skin color or texture, or
loss of feeling in the fingers, hands, or joints,
discontinuethe use of this tool and seek med-

not guarantee the avoidance of these prob-
lems. Users who operate power tools on a
continual and regular basis must monitor
closelytheir physical condit ion and the condi-
tion of this tool.
SPECIALNOTICE: This unit is equipped
with a temperature limiting muffler and spark
arresting screen which meets the r equire-
mentsof California Codes 4442 and 4443. All
U.S. forest land and the states of California,
Idaho, Maine, Minnesota, New Jersey, Ore-
gon, and Washington require by law that
many internal combustion engines be
equippedwith a spark arresting screen. If y ou
operatein a locale where suc h regulations ex-
ist,you are legally responsible for maintaining
theoperating condition of these parts. Failure
to do so is a violation of the law. For normal
homeowneruse, the muffler and s park arrest-
ing screen will not require any service. After
50 hours of use, we recommend that your
mufflerbe serviced or replac ed by your autho-
rized service dealer.
ASSEMBLY
WARNING: If rec eived assembled,
repeatall steps to ensure your unit is pr operly
assembled and all fasteners are secure.
Examine parts for damage. Do not use dam-
agedpar ts.
NOTE: If you need assistance or find parts

It is normal for the fuel filter to rattle in the
empty fuel tank.
Findingfuel or oil residue on muffler is normal
due to carburetor adjustments and testing
doneby t he manufacturer.

ADJUSTING THE HANDLE

WARNING: When adjus ting the assist
handle,be sure it remains above the s afety label
and below the mark or arrow on the shaft.
1. Loosenwing nut on handle.
2. Rotatethe handle on the shaft to an upright
position; retighten wing nut.
NOTE: Yourunit is equipped w ith a special
accessory attached to the assist handle that
can store an extra replacement spool of line.
Tostoreextra s pool, push spool into accesso-
ry until it snaps into place. The s pool can be
removed by firmly pulling on the tap button.

ATTACH ING SHI ELD

WARNING : The shield must be prop-
erlyinstalled. The s hieldprovides partial protec-
tionfr omt heris k of thrown objects to the opera-
tora nd others and is equipped with a line limiter
blade which cuts excess line to the proper
length. The line limiter blade (on underside of
shield) is sharp and can cut you.
