If cubes are not used, they may shrink. The moving cold air starts a slow evaporation. The longer you store cubes, the smaller they get.

To remove ice:

Water softener chemicals (such as salt from a malfunctioning softener) can damage the ice maker mold and lead to poor ice quality. If you cannot avoid a softened water supply, make sure the water soft- ener is operating properly and is well maintained.
