Attribute “A” (9 needle printer)

Attribute “A” consists of descender data and proportional data. The descender data deter- mines whether or not the ninth needle will be used, and the proportional data determines the starting and ending positions of the character in the print area.

Descenders (9 needle printer)

Some characters, like “g” or “y”, extend below the line. To define a character that extends below the line, the ninth needle, which corresponds to row 0 of the matrix field, must be used. Characters which

use row 0 cannot use the top needle or row 8 of the matrix field.

Bit 8 of the attribute determines whether the matrix- field is shifted down one row or not.

Normal matrix field (row 1 up to row 8) is used by setting bit 8 to 1.

Descender matrix field (row 0 up to row 7) is used by setting bit 8 to 0 (See “Computing the Attribute”).
