Chapter 3. Recovering software

The Rescue and Recoveryprogram provides an environment that runs independently of the Windows operating system and is hidden from the Windows operating system. Because the Rescue and Recovery workspace is hidden, it is immune from most virus attacks and provides a safe place to perform rescue and recovery operations that might not be possible in the Windows environment. This chapter will help you become familiar with the following recovery solutions provided by the Rescue and Recovery program installed on your computer:

vCreate Product Recovery discs. See “Creating and using product recovery discs.”

vCreate rescue media. See “Creating and using rescue media” on page 16.

vBack up your hard disk periodically. See “Backup and recovery” on page 12.

vCreate a Recovery Repair diskette. See “Solving recovery problems” on page 15.

Note: The rescue disc, first disc of the Product Recovery discs and backup discs are startable (bootable). They can be started in any type of CD or DVD drive except for a DVD-RAM media.

If you encounter a problem, you can use the recovery tools from either the Windows environment or from the Rescue and Recovery workspace to do one of the two recovery operations:

vRescue files

vRestore your backups

See “Using the rescue and recovery workspace” on page 13 to perform one of the two recovery operations.

See the Lenovo Care program for additional information about the Rescue and Recovery program.

Creating and using product recovery discs

If your computer is equipped with a recordable CD or DVD drive, you can create a set of Product Recovery discs that enables you to restore the contents of the hard disk to the same state as when the computer was originally shipped from the factory. Product Recovery discs are useful if you transfer the computer to another area, sell the computer, recycle the computer, or as a last resort put the computer in an operational state after all other methods of recovery have failed. It is a good idea to create a set of Product Recovery discs as soon as possible.
