Removing the microprocessor and heat sink assembly
To remove the microprocessor and heat sink assembly, do the following:
1.Turn off the computer.
2.Disconnect all cables, power cords, and external options from your computer. See “Locating connectors on the rear of your computer” on page 68.
3.Place a soft, clean towel or cloth on the desk or surface. Hold the sides of your computer and gently lay it down so that the screen is against the surface and the cover is facing up.
4.Remove the computer cover. See “Removing the computer cover” on page 74.
5.Open the system board shielding. See “Opening the system board shielding” on page 75.
6.Locate the microprocessor and heat sink assembly. See “Locating parts on the system board” on page 71.
7.Follow this sequence to remove the four screws that secure the heat sink assembly to the system board:
a.Partially remove screw
b.Partially remove screw
1 , fully remove screw
3 , fully remove screw
2 , and then fully remove screw
4 , and then fully remove screw

8.Carefully lift the heat sink assembly off the system board. Place the heat sink assembly on its side on a clean, flat surface.
9.Release the microprocessor retention latch 1 by pressing down on the end, moving it to the side, and releasing it to the open position. Open the microprocessor bracket frame 2 by lifting up the tab on the top edge. Keep the bracket frame in the open position.
