Page 19

3Power on the target system while pressing and holding ‘T’, this will boot the target system in target disk mode. You may release the key when the FireWire symbol appears.

4On the host system, insert the OS X installation disc and begin installation. Proceed through the installation wizard until you reach the destination volume selection window.

5Select a volume on the storage attached to the Celerity adapter. If a volume is not present, open the Disk Utility from the OS X Installer menu to create a volume. The storage will appear in Disk Utility as ‘AAPL FireWire Media’. Exit the Disk Utility when finished and select the newly created volume.

6Finish the OS X installation, restart the host system when prompted, and complete the OS X setup wizard. You may now remove the OS X installation disc.

7On the host system, obtain and install the latest version of the Celerity OS X driver from the software CD that came with your adapter or the ATTO Technology website.

8On the host system, open System Preferences and restore the Startup Disk to the disk that the host system booted from before performing this procedure. After restarting, you may disconnect the FireWire cable from the target system. The host system is no longer needed.

9Power off the target system and power it back on again normally. If you previously had an OS X installation present, it will boot that version of OS X. Otherwise, the new OS X installation will be booted.

10On the target system, open System Preferences and set the Startup Disk to the new OS X installation and restart.

Linux

Note

These steps assume a basic knowledge of Linux terminal commands. You must also have the correct kernel source files for the appropriate kernel already installed.

1Power on your system and log in as the administrator or a user with proper administrative privileges.

2Insert the Installation CD.

3After the CD mounts, open the Celerity volume on the desktop.

4Open the Linux folder.

5Open the Drivers folder.

6Open the folder corresponding to the speed of the HBA.

7Copy the .tgz file to a temporary folder.

8Open a terminal window and change to the location of copied tgz from step 7.

9Extract the file using the command tar -xfz <filename.tgz>.

10Change to the directory created above then run the installer script ./install.sh.

VMware ESX 4

Driver CD usage during ESX Installation (4.x only)

Note

8Gb Celerity support only.

For ESX Server 3.5 please refer to VMware ESX 3.5 on page 16.

During ESX 4.x installation, you may choose to install customer drivers. This will allow you to install ESX to storage that is attached to your ATTO adapter.

1During ESX installation, select Yes to install customer drivers and click Add.

2The installer will prompt you to insert the media containing the ATTO device driver.

3After you add the ATTO driver, the installer will prompt you to reinsert the ESX installation media and continue with the installation.

Driver CD as an Update CD (4.x only)

1Extract the Driver CD ISO on your local workstation using an third party ISO reader.

Note

Microsoft operating systems after Windows Vista include a built-in ISO reader.

FC-81EN, FC-82EN, FC-84EN specifications

ATTO Technology's FC-82EN is a 16Gb Fibre Channel HBA (Host Bus Adapter) that provides high-performance connectivity for storage area networks. Designed for use with both Windows and Linux operating systems, the FC-82EN is ideal for enterprises seeking to optimize data transfer rates and reduce latency for mission-critical applications.

One of the key features of the FC-82EN is its support for 16Gb Fibre Channel, which doubles the bandwidth from previous generations, allowing for faster data transfers. This is particularly beneficial in environments with heavy I/O workloads, such as virtualized data centers and large databases. With its backward compatibility, users can seamlessly integrate the FC-82EN into existing Fibre Channel networks that operate at 4Gb and 8Gb speeds, ensuring flexibility and protecting existing investments.

The FC-82EN employs advanced technologies to enhance performance and reliability. It incorporates ATTO's proprietary Advanced Data Streaming (ADS) technology, which optimizes data flow between the host system and storage devices. By minimizing processing overhead and maximizing throughput, ADS ensures that data-intensive applications run smoothly. Additionally, the HBA features a built-in intelligent caching mechanism to help manage data transfer and reduce bottlenecks.

Another significant characteristic of the FC-82EN is its support for multipathing, which enhances availability and load balancing across multiple paths in a storage network. This feature is crucial in distributed systems where uptime is critical, as it helps to prevent single points of failure and effectively utilizes available resources.

For manageability and ease of use, the FC-82EN includes ATTO's configurable driver and management software, providing users with a comprehensive suite of tools for monitoring performance, configuring settings, and troubleshooting issues. The adapter also supports end-to-end error detection and recovery protocols, ensuring data integrity throughout the transfer process.

In summary, the ATTO Technology FC-82EN is a robust and versatile Fibre Channel HBA that meets the demanding requirements of modern data environments. With its high-speed capabilities, advanced technologies, and strong management features, the FC-82EN is an excellent choice for organizations looking to enhance their storage network performance and reliability.
