Rack-Mounting the Switch

Refer to the important guidelines below before installing the OmniSwitch chassis in a rack.

It is recommended that two people install the switch in the rack—one person to hold the chassis and position it in the rack, and a second person to secure the chassis to the rack using attachment screws (not supplied).

Alcatel-Lucent provides two rack-mount flanges with each OmniSwitch 6850 Series switch. These flanges support standard 19-inch rack mount installations.

These flanges must be attached to the chassis before the switch can be rack mounted.

Note. If you are installing the switch in a 23-inch wide rack, Alcatel-Lucent offers optional 23-inch rack-mount- ing hardware. For more information, contact your Alcatel- Lucent representative.

Alcatel-Lucent does not provide rack-mount screws. Use the screws supplied by the rack vendor.

To prevent a rack from becoming top heavy, it is recommended that you install heavier equipment at the bottom of the rack whenever possible.

If you are installing the switch in a relay rack, be sure to install and secure the rack as per the rack manufac- turer’s specifications.

Review page 6 for important chassis airflow and access recommendations before installing.

Rack Mounting Steps

To rack-mount the switch, follow the steps below:

Note. Rack-mount flanges may come factory-installed in some cases. If this is the case, skip steps 1 and 2 below.

1Align the holes in the provided rack-mount flanges with the four threaded holes in the OmniSwitch chassis. These threaded holes are located in the left and right sides of the chassis, near the front panel.

2Attach the flanges to the chassis using the provided Phillips-head screws. Be sure to tighten each of the screws firmly using a Phillips screwdriver.

6850-24, 6850-P24X, 6850-P48X, 6850-P48L, 6850-48 specifications

The Alcatel-Lucent 6850 series switches, comprising the 6850-U24X, 6850-48X, 6850-P24, 6850-P48, and 6850-P24L, represent a key advancement in network infrastructure solutions, delivering reliable performance and flexibility for various enterprise networking environments. These switches are designed to meet the needs of both wired and wireless networks, offering an array of features tailored for modern data traffic demands.

One of the standout features of the 6850 series is its Layer 2 and Layer 3 capabilities, allowing for advanced VLAN management and routing functionalities. This ensures seamless communication across multiple devices and subnets while improving overall network efficiency. The switches support a variety of routing protocols such as OSPF, RIP, and PIM, facilitating optimized path selection and load balancing.

The 6850-U24X model features 24 ports with 10 Gigabit Ethernet capabilities, enabling high-speed connections for bandwidth-intensive applications. The 6850-48X, on the other hand, boasts 48 ports, accommodating larger connectivity needs without compromising performance. Meanwhile, the 6850-P24 and 6850-P48 variants are geared towards Power over Ethernet (PoE) applications, providing up to 30W per port to power devices like IP cameras and wireless access points, simplifying installations.

Another key characteristic of the 6850 series is its energy efficiency. These switches incorporate intelligent power management features that help organizations reduce their carbon footprint and operational costs. This is further enhanced by the switches' ability to support Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE), leading to reduced power consumption during low-traffic periods.

The series also supports advanced security features, including Access Control Lists (ACLs), DHCP snooping, and dynamic ARP inspection, which collectively protect against unauthorized access and cyber threats. The built-in redundancy features, such as link aggregation and Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), ensure high availability and network resilience.

In terms of software capabilities, the Alcatel-Lucent 6850 switches are compatible with the Nuage Networks SD-WAN solutions, enabling organizations to leverage software-defined capabilities for greater agility and simplified network management. Furthermore, the switches support flexible stacking options, allowing multiple units to operate as a single logical entity, enhancing scalability and simplifying management.

Overall, the Alcatel-Lucent 6850 series switches offer a balanced blend of performance, flexibility, and security, making them an ideal choice for enterprises looking to enhance their networking capabilities. Their comprehensive feature set positions them as robust solutions for managing contemporary networking challenges.
