SATA Basics

Serial ATA (SATA) is the latest interface standard used for hard drives, optical drives (CD/DVD Rom drives), and other computer devices. Because it uses serial technology, information is transferred in a single stream, rather than along parallel paths. SATA thereby eliminates the restrictions on performance, reliability, and scalability that are inherent in standard IDE (parallel ATA) interfaces. SATA offers the speed and reliability formerly only found on SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) without the high costs and maintenance. SATA allows for RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) systems and the ability to add or remove devices without requiring the system to be powered down first.
