‘96 SPECIFIED FREON

REGULATION

REFRIGERATOR

THIS MARKING ON A REFRIGERATOR DENOTES THAT IT IS A “PRODUCT THAT MEETS THE ‘96 SPECIFIED FREON REGULATION.”

Refrigerators use Freon for their freezing apparatus and heat insulators. Freon is non-flammable and not harmful to the human body directly. Furthermore, it possesses excellent properties which have made it one of the most useful chemical substances and contributed to the development of modern civilization.

In its capacity as a cleaning agent, propellant, and for its use in refrigerators, however, it is thought to have caused the depletion of the atmospheric ozone layer. The decision was made to cease worldwide production of this substance completely and to switch to a substance which has less impact on the ozone layer.
