3Com's Endpoint Admission Defense (EAD) solution—part of its next- generation Intelligent Management Center (IMC) management platform—provides numerous tools to help enterprises safeguard private, mission-critical data by securing the access layer of their networks. Whether users are connecting from a wired or wireless LAN, or remotely over VPN, their identities—along with the configuration of the device they are using to access the network—can be verified. Access to authorized users can be limited to servers relevant to their roles in the organization, while unauthorized users and users of poorly protected devices can be blocked from accessing the network completely. Alternatively, these potential network threats can be granted access to an isolated network segment where unknown users can register for guest access, and where poorly protected devices can be remediated.

As a part of 3Com's next-generation IMC network management framework, EAD integrates with other platform modules to provide management, monitoring and control of the network, services,

applications and users. This holistic approach extends business intelligence through intelligent application layer monitoring to behavioral analysis. IMC’s service-oriented architecture (SOA) enables integration of network and business applications to provide user as well as resource management. Best of all, 3Com's multi-vendor approach to network management enables management of all your network equipment via one intuitive, Web-based management platform.

The User Access Manager (UAM) component of IMC ensures that only authorized users and devices can connect to the network. With UAM, security policies can be enforced at the point of network access, whether a connection is wired, wireless or even through a VPN tunnel. With its built-in Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS) database, UAM greatly simplifies network infrastructure management and the deployment of network login: access devices can be specified from the device list IMC automatically locates on the network and then configured with the appropriate 802.1X network login parameters to communicate directly with UAM.
