3 Hardware installation and initial configuration

You will need a basic understanding of Fibre Channel before installing the ATTO ExpressPCI host adapter. Please refer to Chapter 2 for a list of Fibre Channel-related web sites.

WARNING Remember to back up your system data before changing or installing hardware.

System requirements

The ATTO Express PCI host adapter package contains the host adapter, the ATTO Express Pro- Tools CD and a warranty and registration card. If any of these items are missing, contact your ATTO authorized sales representative.

To install and use the ATTO ExpressPCI Fibre Channel adapter you will need:

A computer with an available 32- or 64-bit PCI expansion slot.

The complete ATTO ExpressPCI FC host adapter package.

Fibre Channel address

ATTO ExpressPCI host adapters are configured with a unique address designated by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. The WorldWide Port Name (WWN) and Node name are the two components of the address assigned to Fibre Channel products. This address, which is stored in the Flash ROM on the ATTO ExpressPCI host adapter, allows the system to recognize it as a unique part of your configuration. The address is clearly marked on the back of the board for easy identification. Please keep a reference copy of the number in a safe place or write in the space provided below.

Installation

WARNING ATTO ExpressPCI host adapters contain components that are sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). ESD can cause damage to the ExpressPCI host adapter. Please follow standard methods to avoid ESD.

1Power down the computer and unplug the computer from all power sources.

2Open the case.

3Install the ATTO ExpressPCI host adapter in any open PCI expansion slot. If you have questions about how to install an expansion card in your system, consult your computer’s documentation.

If you have difficulty seating the ATTO ExpressPCI host adapter in 32-bit PCI bus computers, check to make sure the connector can accommodate 64-bit host adapters.

4Connect Fibre Channel devices by inserting a Fibre Channel cable to the connector on the ATTO ExpressPCI host adapter until you hear a click. Refer to Exhibit 3-1 when selecting cables.

The ATTO ExpressPCI FC 3300 has an embedded duplex LC optical connector and uses a short wave laser. A multimode cable must be used with short wave lasers. See Exhibit 3-1for cable type and maximum distances.

The ATTO ExpressPCI FC 3305 has an embedded copper HSSDC connector. See Exhibit 3-1 for recommended cable types.

5Close the case on the computer and power it up.

Cabling

Fibre Channel technology offers a variety of cabling options including standard copper, equalized copper, and fiber optic depending on the requirements of your environment.

FC 3305, FC 3300 specifications

ATTO Technology has long been synonymous with high-performance network solutions, and its latest offerings, the FC 3300 and FC 3305, are no exception. Designed to enhance storage connectivity, these Fibre Channel host bus adapters (HBAs) are engineered to provide exceptional speed, low latency, and enhanced reliability, making them a preferred choice for data centers and businesses that require powerful data management solutions.

One of the standout features of the FC 3300 and FC 3305 is their support for up to 32 Gbps Fibre Channel data rates. This ensures rapid data transfer, which is crucial for applications that need to handle large volumes of data, such as video editing, scientific computing, and big data analytics. The adapters utilize ATTO's advanced technology to minimize bottlenecks, ensuring that data flows seamlessly between servers and storage systems.

The FC 3300 is engineered for environments where high availability and redundancy are paramount. It offers features such as dual-port capability, which enhances reliability and provides a fallback option in the event of a port failure. This is particularly important for mission-critical applications where downtime can have significant repercussions.

In contrast, the FC 3305 model is targeted at users requiring extensive scalability in their storage networks. With support for multiprotocol environments and advanced management features, the FC 3305 allows seamless integration with existing IT infrastructure. This capability ensures that organizations can upgrade their systems incrementally, rather than performing a complete overhaul.

Both models incorporate intelligent queue management, which optimizes data flow and improves response time. This technology is vital for applications that demand consistent performance under heavy loads. Furthermore, the cards are compatible with a wide range of operating systems and virtualization platforms, providing flexibility and ease of integration.

Security is also a key consideration in today’s data environments, and ATTO has incorporated features that safeguard data integrity during transfers. The adapters provide end-to-end data protection, using advanced encryption methods to secure information while it is in transit.

In summary, the FC 3300 and FC 3305 from ATTO Technology stand out in the market for their incredible speed, reliability, and flexible integration capabilities. With their advanced features, these Fibre Channel HBAs cater to the needs of businesses looking to optimize their storage solutions and enhance their overall data management capabilities. Whether it's supporting high-bandwidth applications or ensuring resilience in critical systems, ATTO continues to lead the way in high-performance networking solutions.
