A escala vertical (retícula) visível através da metade esquerda do binóculo, acima do display da bússola, permite que você calcule a distância de um objeto se você souber sua altura, ou calcule a altura do objeto se você souber a distância. Cada marca na escala vertical possui o valor de 5 MIL (1 Mil é equivalente a um ângulo que pode determinar um objeto com um metro de altura a uma distância de 1000 metros). Logo, se um gráfico de navegação fornecer a altura de um objeto, você poderá determinar a distância do objeto ao olhar para o objeto pelo binóculo e contar os MILs. A seguir, duas fórmulas (atenção para a utilização de sistema métrico):
