L’échelle verticale (réticle), visible à travers la moitié gauche de la jumelle, au-dessus de l’indication de compas, vous permet de calculer la distance d’un objet si vous connaissez sa hauteur, ou de calculer la hauteur d’un objet si vous connaissez à quelle distance il se trouve de vous. Chaque trait de l’échelle verticale a une valeur de 5 MIL (1 Mil est équivalent à un angle qui peut déterminer un objet d’un mètre de hauteur à une distance de 1000 mètres). De plus, si une carte de navigation donne la hauteur d’un objet en le visualisant et en comptant le nombre de Mil, vous pouvez déterminer son éloignement. Voici deux formules (notez que l’on utilise les mesures métriques)

1) Pour mesurer la distance quand la hauteur est connue:

Hauteur de l’objet (m) x 1000 m = Distance en mètres

2) Pour mesurer la hauteur d’un objet quand la distance est connue:
