Understanding U.S. channel numbers

An ATSC PSIP (Advanced Television Systems Committee - Program and System Information Protocol) channel has a two-part channel number, which includes a major channel number and a minor channel number.

For example, for channel 5.1, the major channel number is 5 and the minor channel number is 1.
